Love and marriage are the concerns of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Lucentio’s marriage to Bianca is prompted by his idealized love of an apparently ideal woman. Petruchio’s wooing of Katherine, however, is free of idealism. Petruchio takes money from Bianca’s suitors to woo her, since Katherine must marry before her sister by her father’s decree; he also arranges the dowry with her father. Petruchio is then ready to marry Katherine, even against her will.

Katherine, the shrew of the play’s title, certainly acts much changed. But have she and Petruchio learned to love each other? Or is the marriage based on terror and deception?

The authoritative edition of
The Taming of the Shrew from The Folger Shakespeare Library, the trusted and widely used Shakespeare series for students and general readers, includes:

About the Author

William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

Barbara A. Mowat is Director of Research
emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and author of The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s Romances and of essays on Shakespeare’s plays and their editing.

Paul Werstine is Professor of English at the Graduate School and at King’s University College at Western University. He is a general editor of the New Variorum Shakespeare and author of
Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare and of many papers and articles on the printing and editing of Shakespeare’s plays.

Font Size of Paperback is Wrong

Font Size of Paperback is Wrong
I ordered the Folger Shakespeare Paperbacks of The Merchant of Venice and The Taming of the Shrew at the same time. The covers are the same size, but the font size is clearly different. I have many of the Trade Paperback editions from the Folger Shakespeare Library because of the larger font size. The font size in The Taming of the Shrew is too small. It looks like a manufacturing error where Mass Market font was just put on the larger page size.

This is another in a long line of amazing stories from this time period. Well worth the price and the "language barrier".

I bought this to use in a graduate college course. It was nice to have a copy I could highlight and carry with me. Quick delivery. Great product.

This was a great comprehensive treatment of a play that I only vaguely remembered from seeing a television version of it decades ago. The scholarship behind this version was really excellent. Hardly anything to find fault with. It even slips into some of the bigger pockets of my winter coats. My hat's off to the people at the Folger Shakespeare Library. I hope they have a great time next April when the Bard's 450th anniversary is celebrated.

I enjoyed it very much! Most of the characters were not very well developed but some were developed, more than others. Of the five comedies I read recently, this one, Love's Labour's Lost, Much Ado about Nothing, Twelfth Night, and Measure for Measure, I found this the 2nd most interesting after Twelfth Night. I am a beginning reader of Shakespeare.

Perfect book for my high schooler

This edition is very helpful to understanding the play, because of the side notes on each page. The book is formatted so that the text is on the right side of the book and there are side notes on the left side, which explain some of the more archaic/esoteric terms from the play. We have been reading this play for school, and it's been really helpful to my kids. They are enjoying the play immensely.

Another comedy that drew some laughs from me. I was disappointed by the manipulation by the men towards the women. Then again I am viewing this from modern times. Despite all of that was a good play although it was drawn out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesser Celebrated, But Not The Lesser
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 16, 2014
Personally speaking, it is a great shame committed by Wordsworth Classics to have the fairly elementary responsibility of re-printing an all time classic (deserving of the subtitle) and fumble around with a misspelling on the back cover! i.e. "The Tamimg of the Shrew" (are they having a laugh? OR am I missing something fundamental?)

Besides that, this tale is an account of an energetic power struggle between two, not so innocent, partners. Bemusement, en garde posturing, feisty pleasures in misplaced passion, insecurity masquerading as a point of power, and the feminine suppressed but not faultless…all in all an account (with cadence) of many a contemporary relationship (with the exception of social etiquette and attention to the preservation of fidelity).
