The effects of opiates on the lung

Conclusion

The medical consequences of opioid drug abuse frequently affect the lungs. Reports of pulmonary edema were described by Osler as far back as 1880 (33). The effects may be a direct effect of the drug or indirect effects owing to the method of administration or the presence of contaminants. The effects may be infectious or noninfectious in etiology and can affect the parenchyma, pleura, or mediastinum. The respiratory drive centers can also be affected by the drugs and be a major source of complications. There appears to be a higher incidence of HIV-related opportunistic complications recently in illicit drug abusers (with the advent of HIV disease), with fewer complications related to noninfectious etiologies as compared with those of the last decade (73).
