Xavier University of Louisiana (Xavier), a leading undergraduate institution in preparing Black students to successfully complete medical school, has announced continued progress with Ochsner Health (Ochsner), the Gulf South’s leading academic medical center in training physicians, to launch their transformational Xavier Ochsner College of Medicine (XOCOM).
Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center, the only Level 2 Trauma Center in the region, celebrated the launch of its new General Surgery Residency Program on April 16, 2024. Accredited by the ACGME, the program aims to address the physician shortage projected by 2030 and improve healthcare access by training surgeons to meet high standards of care. The initiative underscores Ochsner's commitment to community health and includes comprehensive facilities and a strong support system to ensure quality training. This program is part of Ochsner Health's broader mission to serve, heal, and educate across the Gulf South, aligning with its long-standing tradition of excellence in medical education and research.
