Senate confirms former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney to Biden administration post

.

The Senate on Tuesday confirmed former Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY) to serve as U.S. representative to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Maloney’s nomination, which would give him an ambassador title, passed by a 63-31 margin. President Joe Biden nominated Maloney, who lost his swing-district seat to Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) in 2022 while serving as chairman of House Democrats’ campaign arm, to lead the OECD last May.

His nomination was nearly put in jeopardy last month when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) threatened to vote against his confirmation over his role as an adviser to Coinbase, the nation’s largest cryptocurrency exchange.

Maloney, who served six terms in the House and is a close ally of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), vowed in a letter to Warren last month that he would immediately resign from all of his private sector advocacy roles if confirmed. He also said he would recuse himself from the agency’s decision-making processes with regard to digital assets.

Warren agreed to support Maloney’s nomination after the letter.

Maloney moved to Paris late last year to be near OECD headquarters and will begin the job immediately.
