About the author
Peter C Brown was born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex in 1959, and grew up in the area. He had assisted and contributed to the work of other writers and websites over the years on the subject of local history and its various niches, when he was prompted by fellow author Dee Gordon in 2012 to consolidate some of his research work about Southend Airport that he had been compiling for several years into a book. This started him on the road to becoming a writer of aviation, local and military history, all inspired by his personal interest.
To date, he has had seventeen books published through Pen & Sword, Fonthill Media, Amberley Publishing, The History Press and Amazon Kindle, and has written magazine articles and internet blogs, and enjoyed many radio guestspots. He now lives in Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, having moved from Essex in 2014.

True, there are some 170 illustrations in this book, but over 100 of these were photographed in the years 2010 to 2014 and consist mainly of a motley collection of airshow photos plus assorted views from around the airport and its environs as it is today, all seemingly included on an 'anything will do to make up the numbers' basis. Of the remaining illustrations, the majority are photos of various visiting aircraft, mainly from the 1960s, which bear no relevance to, or enhancement of, the text in the book.
The main interest for this 100 year old airport lies in the early years, from 1910 to 1945. For the whole of this important era, the author has seen fit to only include ten related illustrations, and three of these were not even photographed at Shoreham.
The balance of the writing does not fare much better. For the years 1910 to 1914, which for many readers would be of primary interest, there are only seven pages of text, but later in the book you will find six pages describing the current airport fire tenders in great detail.
For a book of this type, the inclusion of a few maps is essential. Needless to say, there is not one map in the whole book.
If you enjoy looking at someone else's airshow snaps and aeroplane photos, then this book may be for you. For myself, I can only best describe it as one great big disappointment.
