Resolve a Consumer Dispute By Writing Your Attorney General

No matter how much you complain, some companies just won't budge and do the right thing. In some cases, your Attorney General may be able to help you solve the problem.

Over at Three Thrifty Guys, they remind us about the Consumer Affairs division of your state's Attorney General. We've covered other ways to complain and get results, but this is a good last-ditch effort.

The Attorney General works on behalf of everyone in the state. They're less likely to get involved in one individual complaint. Laws vary in each state. When complaints involve cars or licensed professionals, Consumer Affairs have more authority to act. They're elected officials and they'll also vary on their interest in consumer protection. If it's close to an election, they have an incentive to please the voters. If you send a letter to the Attorney General, also send a copy to the business. Sometimes that's all you need to resolve the dispute.

If the Attorney General can't (or won't) get you results, they'll still track your complaint and look for patterns. If enough people complain, they might start an investigation.
