Program: Don't ignore diastolic blood pressure

The SPRINT (Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial) found that, among high risk adults without diabetes, there was a reduced risk of death if systolic blood pressure was reduced to lower than or equal to 120 mm Hg.

But lowering systolic blood pressure will also lower diastolic blood pressure - and, in some patients, this might lead to an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

A new study advises that patients do not let diastolic blood pressure drop below 70 mm Hg, and particularly not below 60 mm Hg.
