Keep or Toss? How to Streamline Your Makeup Bag

Be honest—when was the last time you dumped out your makeup bag? We're willing to bet it's been a while, and, if you're anything like us, it's so stuffed you can barely get it to close. We enlisted celebrity makeup artist JoAnn Solomon to help three Glamour staffers get their cosmetic cases under control. See her audit of their kits. The Makeup Bag Before: Lindy Segal, associate social media editor "Lindy clearly likes to carry a lot in her makeup bag," says makeup artist JoAnn Solomon. The first step to paring it down is tossing what's old and dirty. "Your makeup bag should be clean, and the products should have valid expiration dates," she says. "If there is no expiration date, a sniff test will help identify whether a product is good or bad." "Lindy clearly likes to carry a lot in her makeup bag," says makeup artist JoAnn Solomon. The first step to paring it down is tossing what's old and dirty. "Your makeup bag should be clean, and the products should have valid expiration dates," she says. "If there is no expiration date, a sniff test will help identify whether a product is good or bad."

"Handling all things social for Glamour, it's only fitting that Lindy's new makeup bag speaks too," says Solomon. We chose Dogeared Let's Makeup Pouch, $24, shopbop.com. Lindy's Diorshow Mascara earned a place in her new bag. "This mascara is still a cult favorite everywhere," says Solomon. Her foundation, however, had to go. Lindy's sensitive skin calls for a product that won't irritate it further, like Tarte Amazonian Clay Foundation, which is paraben-, sulfate-, GMO-, and fragrance-free. Solomon also addressed Lindy's (mega) lipstick collection. "From the many coral and berry lip options we saw before, it's clear Lindy has a penchant for fun lipsticks," she says. "I wanted to get rid of all the tubes and introduce a new idea. The Sephora Collection Mixology Palette is perfect. It include a brush and more than 20 shades that can be mixed or worn alone. Here, Lindy can find the colors she is faithful to and something new. The neat little rectangle fits perfectly in her bag too." And lastly, "every girl needs a few emergency bobby pins at the bottom of her makeup bag for a hair emergency."

The Makeup Bag Before: Nikki Ogunnaike, senior online style editor

"Nikki's kit is really cute, but is a bit worn and in need of an upgrade," says Solomon. "I loved many of her items, but the all-star product of the mix is the Nars All day Luminous Weightless Foundation." And Nikki agrees: "It's one of the best out there," she says.

"I love the way Nikki embraces color, so I chose Kevyn Aucoin Blush in Fira, a deep and rich tone, perfect for her dark complexion," Solomon says. "I also want to see her play up those gorgeous eyes, and one amazing black eyeliner is all she needs to do it. I kept Make Up for Ever AquaMatic in Diamond Black for its inky qualities." Solomon then focused on Nikki's brows. "The Anastasia Brow Powder Duo is an item every woman should own," she says. "It's small and compact, and the chocolate shade has warm undertones for Nikki's reddish-brown complexion." Lastly, "being an avid runner and fitness enthusiast, blotting papers are a great way for Nikki to keep her skin fresh all day long without layering on tons of heavy product. They are wonderful for post-run touch-ups." We like Tatcha Aburatorigami Japanese Beauty Papers, $15, tatcha.com. All the products found a home in a cheeky Breakups to Makeups Makeup Clutch ($35, breakupstomakeups.com).

The Makeup Bag Before: Sophia Chabbott, senior online fashion editor

"Sophia's style is classic and super chic," says Solomon. "She has many peach, bronze, and soft gold colors in her bag, all of which work great for her look."

Sophia's already a fan of Chantecaille, so Solomon upgraded her eyeshadow to the to the Chantecaille Save the Bees Palette, which has four pretty shades and benefits a good cause. The Dior Addict Lip Polish was a keeper. "It's the perfect everyday coral," says Solomon. To keep Sophia's bronze complexion feeling fresh all summer, Solomon added Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer Bronzer to the Rebecca Minkoff Kerry Pouch, ($75, rebeccaminkoff.com). "Top the bronzer with Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Shimmering Nudes Illuminating Powder on cheekbones and the bridge of the nose for a complete look in seconds," adds Solomon.
