According to NPD Group's TRSTS reports, which provides sales data for videogames, Final Fantasy made its debut at number one and sold more copies than either the second or third ranked combined. Square Electronic Arts has also announced that the Final Fantasy series as a whole has sold 30 million units in both Japan and North America.
As Babbage's Etc. quoted: "We've seen a terrific response to Final Fantasy IX in our stores," said Doreen McKenzie, Director of Merchandising, Video Games. "Copies of the game have flown off the shelves throughout the holiday shopping frenzy. This title will be one of the top sellers this holiday season."
