Gangajal pipeline ready for use, city to get Ganga water by month end
Agra: City residents can finally expect some relief from the ongoing water scarcity as Ganga water is set to reach households by the end of this month. The Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam has completed cleaning and testing of the 130 km long pipeline laid to bring Ganga water to Agra. The water has reached the breaking pressure tank (BPT), from where it will reach the two water works stations in Agra: Jeevani Mandi and Sikandra.
Ganga water will be supplied first from the Sikandra water treatment plant but will take two to three months to reach Jeevani Mandi.
Under the central government’s Gangajal project, Agra will get Ganga water from Palra headworks in Bulandshahr's Upper Ganga canal. For this, around 130 Km of pipeline has been laid. Jal Nigam is targeting to start domestic supply of 140 cusecs of Ganga water to Agra by the end of this month.
Agra south MLA Yogendra Upadhyay, who is also supervising works related to the Gangajal project, said, “After cleaning and testing of the 130 km long pipeline, the Ganga water has reached BPT. The main function of BPT is to regulate pressure of the water coming to Agra from Palra headworks. From BPT, the Ganga water will be supplied to the two water works stations in the city through pipelines being laid in the city.”
He said, “In the next one week, the functioning of BPT will be tested at its full capacity of 140 cusec. Supply of 60 cusec of Ganga water at the Sikandra water works station will start within this month. The remaining 80 cusec will be supplied to the Jeevani Mandi station. This will take two to three months, as the station is undergoing repair work”.
Agra is mainly dependent on the Yamuna for water. Thanks to the Gangajal project, the city will now get Ganga water as well. Yamuna water, being highly polluted with toxins, needs to be diluted by Ganga water. The treatment of raw Yamuna water takes place at two Water Works stations in the city: Jeevani Mandi and Sikandra.
