AGRA: The Gangajal water treatment facility at Jeevani Mandi water works station here inaugurated by state urban development minister Ashutosh Tandon on Friday was found to be leaking at over a dozen places. The inlet and tube settler unit for supply of Ganga water in different parts of the city had been operationalized on January 21.
Under the Rs 2,887-crore Gangajal project, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Agra is getting 140 cusecs of Ganga water from Palra headworks in Bulandshahr's Upper Ganga canal.
For this, a 130-km pipeline was laid. The project was launched in 2005 and its deadline has been forwarded several times.
Under the project, Jeevani Mandi water works station is being upgraded. In December 2019, the upgradation of 225 million litre per day (MLD) capacity raw water treatment plant was completed.
After inspection of the facility by the minister, who was accompanied by principal secretary Manoj Kumar Singh and managing director of the Jal Nigam Vikas Gothalwal, the raw water tanks made of concrete were found to be leaking.
On inspection, TOI found over a dozen leakages in the base of the treatment facility. The drain pipes were covered with rust. At several spots, sealants were applied to stop the leakage.
According to sources, over Rs 92 crore has been sent on upgrading the Jeevani Mandi water works station. A private company was contracted for development of the 225 MLD water treatment plant. The leakages have occurred due to flaw in design and use of sub-standard quality material in constructing the tanks, it is learnt.
When questioned about the leakages in the Gangajal treatment facility, minister Tandon said, “The matter has not come to my knowledge. I will talk to the officials in this regard. The matter will be investigated.”
Gothalwal said, “Usually leakages do not take place in a water treatment facility. The reason behind the leakages will be investigated. Suitable action will be taken.”
