AGRA: In a major step towards bringing natural gas pipeline directly to the kitchens, the state cabinet has cleared the proposal of Green Gas Limited (GGL), a joint venture between GAIL and Indian Oil Corporation Limited, to start laying infrastructure for the project. Agra and Lucknow have been chosen as the first cities where piped natural gas (PNG) connections will be provided.
A decision to the effect was taken on Tuesday during a cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Yogi Adityanath.
According to a senior official of the ministry of urban development, the state cabinet has also approved guidelines for the laying of underground gas pipeline. The move will help reduce pollution and road traffic caused by transportation of gas cylinders. Standard security arrangements will be made during the laying of underground pipes within city limits, said the official. He also added that advanced technology will be used to ensure minimum damage to roads and existing infrastructure.
Unlike liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders, underground pipelines will ensure safe and cheap fuel supply. GGL has also been instructed to make adequate barricading of spots that will be dug up for the purpose. It has also been asked to make sure traffic flow is not disrupted and no accidents or damage to public properties take place.
Additional municipal commissioner of Agra, Vijay Kumar, said, “We are yet to receive the formal order but PNGs will be provided in all 100 wards of the city.”
Vimla Mathur, a resident of Dayalbagh, said, “It is an economical alternative to LPG cylinders. We would not have to bother about booking and delivery of cylinders.”
A resident of Sikandra, Dushyant Chaudhary, said, “It is an environment-friendly initiative. People do not have to worry about weight and leakage issues which are sometimes seen in case of LPG cylinders.”
Sunita Singh, a government school principal, said, “The calorific value of PNG is higher which means less consumption as compared to LPG.”
House maker Veena Shukla said, “Piped fuel will prove to be beneficial for us.”
