The drug opium comes from the milky sap of the poppy capsules. Before it is sold as raw opium it is dried so that it loses about a third of its moisture. This lithograph shows the finished opium being loaded up onto small ships, clippers, on the river Ganges, ready to be taken to Calcutta for export.
