Click here for more detailsThe drug opium comes from the milky sap of the poppy capsules. Before it is sold as raw opium it is dried so that it loses about a third of its moisture. This lithograph shows the finished opium being loaded up onto small ships, clippers, on the river Ganges, ready to be taken to Calcutta for export.
