The Masters Golf Tournament

This major golf tournament is played annually at the Augusta National Golf Club during the first full week of April. The Masters after orignally set up by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts in 1934 and for the first five years was called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament.

Winning the Masters gives the golfer many advantages in his golfing career, as the champion will then be able to play in the other three majors for the next five years and also a lifetime invitation to the Masters. The golfer will also receive membership on the PGA Championship) for the next five years. The most successful golfer at the Master is Jack Nicklaus who has won the tournament 6 times between 1963 and 1986, he also took the record for being the oldest player to win at the age of 46 years 2 months 23 days.

Another major bonus of winning the Masters is the money. Not only will sponsership deals go up for the winner but the prize fund for the 2006 Masters was a massive $7 million (US).

There are many rules in the Masters that remain today from 1934, including the four-day stroke playing of 18 holes each day instead of the then customary 36 holes on the third day, eliminating qualifying rounds, and exemption from the playing area for anyone except the golf player and the caddie.

The Course

The Masters is the only one of the golf major championships to take place on the same course each year, and is held at the Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia USA. The course was designed by Roberts and Jones with the legendary course architect Alister MacKenzie.

The Augusta golf course is known for its beauty and as the Master is held in Spring all the flowers are in bloom for the golfing tournament. Each of the 18 holes on the course are named after a flower associated with them.
