Honorary Degree is winning formula for Max

The President of the governing body for motor racing events - Max Mosley - has been awarded an Honorary Degree by Northumbria University.

Mr Mosley received an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law alongside students from the School of Design and the School of Informatics, Engineering and Technology.

As President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, he has transformed motor racing into an international phenomenon with an estimated audience of 360 million viewers worldwide.

It was following a visit to Silverstone in the 1960s that Max was to develop a lifelong love affair with the sport of motor racing. He raced for the London Racing Team and later with Frank Williams’ Formula Two team.

In 1969 he co-founded March Engineering which quickly became one of the world’s leading racing car manufacturers, exporting to Europe, Japan, the USA and South America.

He was a leading member of the of the Formula One Constructors’ Association throughout the 1970s and early 1980s and was one of its two representatives at the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile).

Having experienced the motor industry from all angles, Max has continually pushed for higher safety standards. He played a key role in the negotiations leading to the Concorde Agreement which has governed Formula One racing for the past 24 years. He is also president and spokesperson of ERTICO - Intelligent Transport Systems Europe, a forward-thinking organisation that has the interests of the motorist, transport systems and environment at heart.

In 1986 he was elected president of the Manufacturers’ Commission of the FISA (Fédération Internationale du Sport Automobile) and represented the world’s motor industry on the World Motor Sport Council. He was elected president of the FIA in 1993, re-elected unopposed in 1997 and again in 2001 for a further four-year term.

The FIA is the governing body for many major motor racing events including the Formula 1 World Championship, the Formula 3000 International Championship and the GT Championship.

Max is 65 years old and is married with two grown-up sons. His hobbies are snow-boarding and walking.

Professor Kel Fidler, Vice-Chancellor of Northumbria University said: “The world of Formula One incorporates all the elements of design currently on offer at Northumbria from transportation design to multi-media to graphics.

“Max is no stranger to Northumbria, indeed he delivered a public lecture here last year and our relationship with him is one we hope to consolidate in the future.’’
