About WBI

En Francais, En Espanol

The World Bank Institute (WBI) is a global connector of knowledge, learning and innovation for poverty reduction. We connect practitioners and institutions to help them find suitable solutions to their development challenges. With a focus on the "how" of reform, we link knowledge from around the world and scale up innovations.

Vision

WBI aims to inspire change agents and equip them with relevant tools to help achieve development results.

Strategy

WBI has invested in a series of nontechnical approaches that complement technical solutions to development problems:

  • Innovation for Development: WBI’s role is to be a catalyst for development. By leveraging the global reach of new and innovative technologies, we are developing tools, methods, and online platforms to facilitate an open and collaborative development process between governments, citizens, and other stakeholders.

  • Knowledge Exchange:  WBI facilitates sharing of information and experiences among development practitioners and policymakers. WBI has created a dedicated unit that focuses on South-to-South practitioner exchanges and plays a partnership and outreach role in raising the prominence of SSKE through the ‘Aid Effectiveness’ and G20 processes.

  • Leadership and Coalition Building: WBI believes that supporting open and collaborative governance will enable local change agents to achieve development results in their own contexts.  Guided by this vision, WBI seeks to strengthen the capacity of citizens to use innovative tools and practical approaches toward engendering participatory and sustainable change.

  • Structured Learning: WBI has more than 50 years of experience in adult learning. Our learning products are for development practitioners and include courses, seminars, conferences, webinars and e-learning modules covering a variety of topics relevant to international development. They are interactive, engaging and results oriented and encourage peer learning and knowledge sharing. They are primarily offered through local and regional institutions and increasingly through the e-Institute, a unique global portal that offers a vast array of e-learning courses.

WBI is applying these approaches to the seven topics below that cut across sectors and regions and reflect strong country demand and World Bank's corporate priorities:  Climate Change, Fragile and Conflict-Affected States, Governance, Growth and Competitiveness, Health Systems, Public-Private Partnerships and Urban.
