Myanmar workers in Japan protest against Tatmadaw’s actions

Myanmar workers in Japan gathered in front of the United Nations (UN) office in Tokyo to object to the recent political events happening in their home country.

The Tatmadaw detained Myanmar President U Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, along with other senior figures from the ruling party, on February 1 in response to alleged poll fraud by the Union Election Commission (UEC).

This has prompted Myanmar nationals living in Japan to seek help from the Japanese government and the international community to intervene and restore order in the country and to demand the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the other political leaders.

“We will request the nations around the world to put pressure on them and for the UN army to intervene,” said Union of Myanmar Citizens Association (Japan) Associate Information Officer Ko Myo Gyi.

The congregation voiced their support for democracy and against military dictatorship and objected to the actions of the Tatmadaw during the protest. They also backed their acceptance and approval of the 2020 election results.

The Myanmar armed forces has declared a year-long state of emergency with Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing now in power. Vice President U Myint Swe will serve temporarily as president.

The Tatmadaw will reorganise with the UEC to clarify some 10 million cases of voter irregularity discovered after the 2020 election. A fresh round of elections will now be held and power transferred to the winner, the Tatmadaw said in its Notification 1/2021 issued on February 1. - Translated
