In the spring of 1941, when Slovenia was invaded by Germany, Italy, and Hungary, Slovenes faced at best assimilation, and at worst deportation or extermination. Still, a significant number of Slovenes would eventually collaborate with the Axis powers. Why were they so ready to work with their invaders, and why did the occupiers permit this collaboration?

Gregor Joseph Kranjc investigates these questions in To Walk with the Devil, the first English-language book-length account of Slovene-Axis collaboration during the Second World War. Examining archival material and post-war scholarly and popular literature, Kranjc describes the often sharp divide between Communist-era interpretations of collaboration and those of their émigré anti-Communist opponents.

Kranjc situates this divide in the vicious civil war that engulfed Slovenia during its occupation – a conflict that witnessed at its bloody climax the execution of over 10,000 Slovene collaborators and opponents of the new Communist Yugoslav regime in the wake of liberation. To Walk with the Devil makes clear how these grisly events continue to ripple through Slovene society today.

Editorial Reviews

Review

‘An important and valuable contribution to the historiography of European collaboration… Kranjc’s book is a timely addition to the history of wartime Slovenia and contemporaneous debates about collaboration.’

―Mark Biondich, The Journal of Modern History vol 87:02:2015

To Walk with the Devil succeeds admirably in addressing the complex problem of collaboration during the Second World War – which has become a major topic of interest – through a close study the Slovene case. Strongly researched and well-crafted, it is a valuable contribution to several current historical debates that stretch well beyond this specific country.’―Padraic Kenney, Department of History, Indiana University

The best, most objective description and analysis of complex relationships among many armed factions during Axis occupation of Slovenia, 1941-45. For the first time the seemingly simple concept of "collaboration" is thoroughly and objectively examined and defined. The emerging picture is anything, but black and white. What has commonly been overlooked by other writers on this controversial subject are historic relationships of Slovenes with neighboring powers such as Austro/Germany, Italy, Hungary, Serbia and even France. This background, included in Kranjc's book, together with a good assessment of Slovene political party system prior to WWII, enables a reader to better understand developments that followed the Axis invasion and it's ultimate defeat. Throughout the book some comparisons are made with conditions in other Axis-occupied countries, particularly France, Slovakia, Poland and Greece. The book will provide useful insights to a reader whether he/she be steeped in "official", or emigre-produced literature on the subject.

this is the best book on this subject and is long overdue. generally unbiased (aside from the image on the cover) which is unusual for this topic. a scholarly work and not suitable for the reader with either no previous knowledge or only a casual interest in the events of this period.

Excellent account of what took place in that part of the world, obscure or unknown to most Americans but very real to those who were forced to live through it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nazism, Collaboration and Resistance in southern Europe
Reviewed in Canada on September 16, 2013
In this courageous and well-written book Gregor Kranjc makes an important contribution to the history of Slovenia during the Second World War. He also makes an important contribution to studies of occupation, resistance and, especially, collaboration in Europe more broadly. Kranjc criticizes the post-war interpretations put forward in the post-war period both by historians in the communist regime and the emigre community of the the occupation of Slovenia by Nazi Germany, Hungary, and Italy. Moving past black-and-white, good-guys/bad-guys narratives, he presents a more nuanced portrait of a chaotic, ambiguous, and constantly changing situation. Kranjc presents this complex and subtle argument in clear, straightforward and engaging fashion. It was a pleasure to read this book. I actually read the book on a long flight to Slovenia and while travelling through the country. I learned a lot about Slovenia (from which my parents emigrated in the 1930s and 1940s), about the Nazi practice of occupation, the difficulties of resistance, and the complexity of labeling people collaborators. The book helped to explain the current political climate in this small republic of 2 million people. I saw connections between Kranjc's work and the way that the WWII period was portrayed in museums and memorials. Even if your interest in Slovenia is limited (you should go there: fantastic geography, great food, wonderful people), you will enjoy Kranjc's well-written, effectively organized, and engaging book on the complex topic of collaboration. You could apply what you learn in this book to dozens of other cases of occupation, collaboration, and resistance. It changed the way I thought about collaboration and resistance--and Slovenia.
