I-405 reopens after Flanders Crossing installation; pedestrian, bike bridge to open this spring

Interstate 405 is now open in both directions after it was closed Friday evening for the installation of Portland’s new pedestrian and bicycle bridge.

Construction of the 355,000-pound Flanders Crossing began in June 2020, and the bridge span and was installed over the freeway Saturday. The bridge is 24 feet wide and designed for two-way pedestrian and bike traffic.

It spans I-405 at Northwest Flanders Street and is part of a “Neighborhood Greenway route” connecting Northwest Portland, the Pearl District, Old Town Chinatown and downtown, according to the project site.

More work needs to be done before the bridge opens to the public, including building traffic signals, a concrete bridge deck and bridge landings, according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

The bureau estimated the bridge will open in the spring — possibly at the end of March.
