Biography

Captain of the undefeated Australian Schoolboys Tour of Great Britain in 1972, Royce Ayliffe spent several seasons playing for Wests Wollongong (under coach Cliff Watson) before coming to Easts as a 19-year-old in 1976. A rugged prop who modelled his game on the great Arthur Beetson, Ayliffe captained the Bob Fulton-coached Roosters to the minor premiership in 1980-81 and was named Dally M Captain of the Year in 1980. Ayliffe led Easts into the 1980 grand final loss to C’bury and his clash with Graeme Hughes in that game was a stark example of his tough, no-nonsense style. Ayliffe made one appearance for Australia, as a reserve in the Second Test against France at Brisbane in 1981, coming onto the field for the final 18 minutes of the match. He played in the 1982 State of Origin series but battled factions inside the Easts club before seeing out his career with Souths. In 2001 Ayliffe was appointed to the NRL Judiciary.

G'day Royce! I was at primary school with you (Mt St Thomas) & followed your career since. I was an officer in the Navy & also a Hells Angel 'til moving to the UK in 83. You always were fanatical about rugby even back then... well done to you. All the best in "retirement" mate.

Royce Ayliffe was the toughest bloke to represent the Roosters. Ayliffe was a great inspirational captain leading his team from the front row into many physical confrontations. A Rooster legend.

Why are there no stats for the 1984 season? Thanks.
