When Dr. John Densmore was a child, he underwent a major, open-chest surgery to repair his sunken chest, a condition known as pectus excavatum. Today, Dr. Densmore is a pediatric surgeon at Children’s Wisconsin, caring for kids with that very same condition. “It certainly informs the way that I think about and care for kids and families who are struggling with this,” said Dr. Densmore. Just two days after graduating high school, Mallory signed up for the Children’s Wisconsin Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship Program. Retinoblastoma — cancer of the retina — is extremely rare. Even rarer are doctors who specialize in it. Aparna Ramasubramanian, MD, a pediatric oncologist at Children’s Wisconsin, is just one of a handful of such doctors in the United States. “I've always loved ophthalmology and I always knew I wanted to work with kids,” said Dr. Ramasubramanian. “Retinoblastoma is a very rare tumor and very few doctors specialize in it, but it’s also very treatable. Few people are lucky enough to come to work every day and know they’re truly helping kids like never before. But that’s exactly what Affi does as a clinical supervisor of the Children’s Wisconsin Integrated Behavioral Health program. Affi is a leader on a team of behavioral health consultants who provide mental and behavioral health care in our primary care offices. It’s an innovative approach that is helping increase access to vital mental health care for kids and teens. Affi has always been drawn to kids, from her earliest days babysitting and working as a camp counselor to getting her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in children, adolescents and family. “Kids are just so much fun. I can sit and talk to a kid for hours. They're resilient, they're curious, their minds have no bounds,” said Affi. “Sadly, our kids are going through a mental health crisis. That’s really what drew me to this program. We’re increasing access, improving mental health equity and also decreasing stigma. We’re one of the biggest pediatric care systems doing this work and we’re reaching so many kids.” Do you also love kids? Haley is not afraid to admit when she is wrong. She recently completed Foundations of Leadership, a year-long program that gives new leaders at Children’s Wisconsin knowledge, skills and tools to help them — and their teams — succeed. Before she started, she had never heard of it. And she assumed it was going to be another surface-level leadership program that rehashed concepts she already knew. She could not have been more wrong. “I was fully shocked by the level of insight, vulnerability and connections I made in this program,” she said. “It is so essential to put yourself in situations that will force you to grow. During Foundations of Leadership, I enhanced my skills, identified areas where I could improve and made valuable connections with other leaders from throughout the system. You would have to work very hard to walk away from this program without any new insight.
