Play the right tunes

While “Thriller” and “Monster Mash” will be at the top of your playlist, they’re bound to kill the party mood after being played a few too many times. Make sure to mix fun, upbeat, crowd-pleasing music with those Halloween-party staples to keep your guests entertained and partying into the wee hours of the morning.

Decorate according to your theme

If you’re going with the traditional spooky theme for this year’s festivities, make sure to dim the lighting, use props like fog machines and strobe lights, and add things like spiderwebs and skeletons throughout the party space to enhance the scariness of the atmosphere. Also, place some Ouija boards and tarot cards in various places so your guests can entertain themselves with fun, Halloween-inspired games.

Play theme-based movies

To enhance the mood and theme of your party a little further, have different theme-appropriate movies playing throughout the party space — with the volume off, of course. These movies aren’t for watching; they’re simply there to add to the party’s atmosphere. Get a few TVs, place them in different areas, and throw on some slasher films for traditional Halloween-themed parties, ‘80s movies for your old-school bash, and so on.

Serve Halloween-themed food and drinks

You can’t just order a pizza at an authentic Halloween party. Intensify the atmosphere by serving food inspired by your theme. For a classic fright fest, a sure crowd-pleaser would be chicken witch fingers, chow mein noodle Halloween spiders and gummy worm gelatin shots. You can also add food coloring to all the drinks to give them more of a spooky-potion feel. Get creative!

Planning a Halloween party is no easy feat. You need to think about the food, the décor and all the small extras that’ll take your party from fun to fantastic. But the effort is well worth it; after ironing out all the tiny details, you and your costume-clad guests will be partying up a spooky storm.

Make sure your memorable Halloween bash ends on the right foot by being a responsible host when it comes to serving alcohol. Offer nonalcoholic beverages as well, like soda, juice and water so that your guests have a choice, make sure food is available so that partygoers aren't enjoying their drinks on an empty stomach, and most importantly, if one of your guests has too much to drink, offer to take them home or call a cab.
