Los Angeles meets 20 percent renewable energy goal

By The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles has met its goal of providing 20 percent of the city's power from renewable sources in 2010 largely thanks to a wind plant.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa plans a formal announcement Thursday. Villaraigosa set the energy goal, which was achieved by opening the municipally owned Pine Tree Wind Power Plant in the Tehachapi Mountains.

The city Department of Water and Power opened the plant in 2009 and by the end of 2010 it accounted for half of the utility's renewable energy.
