Title Oral history interview with Elliott Gardner recorded 2007 Apr. 16
Description Interview conducted by Allison Kinard. Elliott Gardner was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 7th, 1944. He went to basic training at Fort Dix, NJ and then had additional training in communications at Fort Garden, GA and Fort Campbell, KY. He was attached to the 101st Airborne division, and was shipped over to Vietnam in the summer of 1965. He arrived at Vung Tao, at the Southern tip of Vietnam on his 21st birthday. From there he was assigned to many different areas as a communications specialist, including Tan Son Nhut air base, and Bien Hoa. Gardner describes his first impressions of Vietnam, and his impressions as he was leaving the country to return home as well. He also talks about daily life: how the soldiers kept in touch, the food, what they did for entertainment, and humorous events. Gardner was discharged in the spring of 1966, after being in Vietnam for a year and a half. He returned to Connecticut and received an education in architecture under the GI Bill.
