Title Dr. David Burbank, 1850
Description Dr. David Burbank was born in Effingham, New Hampshire on December 17, 1821 and died in Los Angeles, California on January 21, 1895. He trained for the dental profession and began his practice in Waterville, Maine. In 1853 he moved to San Francisco and resumed his practice until 1866. In 1867 he purchased La Providencia Rancho from David W. Alexander and Francis Mellus, and he purchased the western portion of the San Rafael Rancho (4,603 acres) from Jonathon R. Scott and moved to Burbank. Dr. Burbank's land holdings totaled approximately 9,200 acres at a cost of $9,000.00. In 1886 he sold his land holdings to the Providencia Land, Water and Development Company for $250,000.00. The Providencia Land, Water and Development Company created the town of Burbank and properties in the town went on sale May 1, 1887. Dr. Burbank also owned a house in Los Angeles on South Main Street between 5th and 6th Streets and the Burbank Theatre, which opened on November 27, 1893 at a cost of $150,000.00. The theater was intended to be an opera house, instead it staged plays and became known nationally. The theatre featured many well known actors of the time including Fay Bainter and Marjorie Rambeau, until it had deteriorated into a burlesque house. Black and white photographic reprint, 4 x 5 in.
