LUCY AND DESI

By WILLIAM C. TROTT, United Press International

Desi Arnaz made a posthumous tribute to ex-wife Lucille Ball, who was one of six people awarded Kennedy Center Honors Sunday night in Washington. Robert Stack took the stage and said Arnaz, who died last week of cancer, 'would have wanted to have been here' and then read from Arnaz's autobiography: 'Lucy was the show ... (the rest of the cast) and I were just props.'

Also receiving honors from President Reagan were singer Ray Charles, violinist Yehudi Mehuhin, choreographer Antony Tudor and the acting duo of Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. The show, which featured a sing-along led by Stevie Wonder, will be aired by CBS Dec. 26. Walter Cronkite served as master of ceremonies and the program was overflowing with stars like Peter Ustinov, Quincy Jones, Valerie Harper, Pam Dawber, Walter Matthau, Glenn Close, Hal Linden and Jose Ferrer.
