75 years ago today, Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell was published for the first time in the UK. This groundbreaking and best-selling novel has become a hallowed literary example of political and dystopian fiction. It birthed the incredibly useful term "Orwellian" as an adjective for government without limit, and many terms used throughout the novel are so thoroughly ingrained in the zeitgeist as to be deployed even by politicians themselves, including "Big Brother", "doublethink", "Thought Police", "thoughtcrime", and "Newspeak."
