This week’s #FeaturedFriday spotlights Andrew Lombardi, coauthor (with Joseph Ottinger) of “Beginning Spring 6, Second Edition: From Beginner to Pro.” He shared a bit about his writing experience and inspiration: Q: How would you describe the experience of writing your book? “The latest edition of the book was certainly easier than the first given we had an existing structure and codebase to work from. We worked hard to ensure correctness and to inject some new topics that we only lightly covered in the first edition.” Q: Most tech authors write their books alongside work/life responsibilities—how did you find the time to complete your book? “As the head of a consulting company, I manage a team of 10 engineers so the time shows up in small pockets and you have to steal time where you can.” Q: How did you decide on the structure & organization of the book? “Working together with Joe we assessed the landscape of what was new in #Spring and current technologies and usefulness and decided on what we felt would be the best items to cover. This week for #FeaturedFriday we’re spotlighting Abdelaziz Testas, author of “Distributed Machine Learning with PySpark: Migrating Effortlessly from Pandas and Scikit-Learn.” He shared a bit about his writing experience and inspiration: Q: What inspired you to write this book? “The inspiration for the book arises from my personal journey as a data scientist. Starting with #pandas and #ScikitLearn for small to medium-sized datasets, I encountered limitations as I tackled larger projects. Recognizing the need for scalable solutions, I explored #PySpark's distributed computing capabilities. Wanting to share this transition with others facing similar scalability challenges, I decided to document my experiences in the book.”   Q: What was your research process like? “It wasn't overly challenging. With extensive experience working with the algorithms covered in the book, my focus primarily involved obtaining suitable datasets for demonstrations, refining the outline, and thoroughly testing the code. Apress played a significant role in fleshing out the outline, and with their valuable feedback, the book came to fruition.”   Q: How did you decide on the structure and organization of the book? “Drawing from my experience, I recognized that most algorithms are commonly applied for regression and classification tasks, with additional tasks like recommender systems and natural language processing also prevalent. I structured the book accordingly, with chapters devoted to each of these areas. Additionally, I included a chapter addressing the transition from pandas and scikit-learn to PySpark, aiming to demonstrate that it's not as daunting as some might expect. Finally, I included a chapter on model deployment to provide a comprehensive overview of the entire #datascience workflow.”   Q: How did you decide on the target audience? “As a Data Scientist, I have a deep understanding of the needs and challenges faced by professionals in the field. Recognizing the importance of machine learning skills in today's landscape, I tailored the book to cater not only to data scientists but also to data engineers and machine learning practitioners.
