‘Super kidney’ to the rescue! Meet Judy Steffy and Denny Jacobus. Faced with double kidney failure, Steffy was in need of a transplant. Unable to find a donor match among family and close friends, she made a desperate plea on Facebook. Jacobus’ wife, Linda, recognized Steffy as the mother of her son’s childhood best friend. She showed her husband the story and he offered to see If he would be a match. After extensive testing, Jacobus turned out to be a perfect match. The wheels were quickly set in motion with the UCI Health kidney transplant team for him to donate one of his healthy kidneys to take over the work of Steffy’s failing organs. The surgery was a success and within four days, Jacobus resumed his active lifestyle. Steffy, freed from dialysis and getting stronger by the day with Jacobus’ super-sized kidney, has been given the green light to return to her job as a lawyer. Both are full of gratitude for the transplant team’s excellent care and look forward to brighter days ahead. The UCI Health Kidney Transplant Program is Orange County’s oldest and highest volume transplant program. It also has a robust Living Donor Program. Just as there are foods that amplify #stress and anxiety like caffeine, refined sugar, highly processed foods and alcohol, there are also foods that help tamp down their effects on our physical and #mentalhealth. “Fueling your body correctly can definitely help reduce stress and inflammatory responses,” says Katie Rankell, a registered dietitian and program director of the UCI Health Weight Management Program. “Focus on whole foods like fiber-rich grains, fruits, vegetables and fish to keep you on a more even keel.” Learn more at https://bit.ly/3QkRcoC

UCI Health reposted this
We were honored to host over 400 of our new UCI Health community network physicians last night at a welcome reception in Anaheim. What was planned as an introduction between new colleagues quickly turned into a reunion of physicians who have studied, practiced alongside, and partnered with one another for decades. Thank you and welcome to all of those who will contribute to the transformation of UCI Health as a leader in the integration of academic and community-based health systems. We look forward to the collaboration that will take place between these new partners with access to both advanced medicine and the convenience of care close to home.
