Good tip to remember when I’m stranded on an isolated island. Thanks.

What happens after you leave it in shade? Is it just easier to crack open?

    [–]Stoneybologna420 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I would imagine it's so the coconut is a little bit cooler but not to ruin the flavor like a fridge

    [–]dice1111 329 points330 points  (14 children)

Thank goodness all deserted islands come with power and a freezer by default.

    [–]baxielol 114 points115 points  (2 children)

fuck could someone help me find that in the world settings

    [–]broccoli-love 36 points37 points  (0 children)

    Just use google while stranded???

    [–]dice1111 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While your in those settings, turn down the natural disasters please. It's up way too high. The political disasters as well.

    [–]MaddogOIF 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Mainly the ones with polar bears and murderous clouds of smoke.

There are ways to naturally make ice in a desert. I am sure you could apply similar principles on an island

      [–]fukwhutuheard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they sell coconuts at the grocery

        [–]Spacecowboy78 197 points198 points  (25 children)

Tried it. Didn't work. Coconut intact.

        [–]QuantumPolagnus 88 points89 points  (9 children)

If you can hear it sloshing around and not clearly full, it probably wouldn't work.

        [–]unseth 144 points145 points  (8 children)

                Frozen grapes are amazing.

                [–]f33f33nkou 2 points3 points  (1 child)

                What about hot grapes

                [–]yepyouknowme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microwaved grapes are a different kind of fun

                [–]Steezli 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I mean idk about fresh, I suppose I never eat plain banana out of the freezer but 90% of the banana bread I make is with frozen bananas. Since banana s get sweeter as they ‘ripen’ this also makes the banana bread, in my opinion, taste better.

Yes my nana must have some tang. Else it is garbage.

                  [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mash up banana and freeze it in a bowl.

                  Banana icecream, try it.

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drink a protein smoothie for breakfast every morning, so bananas are always in my freezer. And they make great one-ingredient ice cream - if, of course, you like banana ice cream.

                  [–]GranolaHippie 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Blueberries so long as they aren’t washed first. They come back out after thawing like normal. If washed they come out gross tho.

                  [–]moore-doubleo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                  Grapes.

                  [–]anonymonoclonius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Freezing them is a good way to store them and I do it all the time. You can also find frozen coconuts in stores. The texture is a bit worse compared to fresh but it's perfectly usable.

                  [–]VagabondVivant 310 points311 points  (10 children)

I might be a little slow, but what exactly is this a lifehack for? To wait five hours to end up with an open-but-frozen coconut, with meat you can't eat and water you can't drink until you thaw it out?

I think I'll stick to opening it with a rock, thanks.

                  [–]Nathaniel820 38 points39 points  (2 children)

We aren’t even on an island anyways. Just use a big knife to cut/whack it in half for the meat, and if you’re really lazy and only want the water just use an electric drill and stick a straw in.

                  [–]Chillocks 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Or just go to a store and buy a prepackaged container of coconut water.

                  [–]Steinrik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And help fill up the landfill!

                  [–]redpuffle_ 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s a good summertime snack and if you let it thaw for just a couple minutes, you can pick at it with a knife or something for a coconut slushy/ice dessert.

                  [–]TemporaryTieEight 21 points22 points  (3 children)

                  Rest in peace Grant :(

                  [–]Taint_Flicker 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I was very confused by this comment until I watched the video. My son and I used to watch this guy all the time, just the other day he mentioned that Grant is no longer the one doing the videos. Your comment made Google hos name to find out what happened. I'm not sure I can share this info with my son, he was one of the quality youtubers I didn't mind my son watching.

                  [–]TheKillOrder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes he used to be amazing. There came a point where it felt like low quality (only so much content can be made) though. If your son is young then prolly best not too. If he doesn’t ask don’t answer that’s my opinion

                  [–]Fl4shbang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grant stopped doing the videos himself some time before he died (I think over a year). That's when I stopped watching, it just wasn't the same without him. I was really sad to hear he died :(

                  [–]thunder_thais 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That royalty free music is soooo annoying

                  [–]aVarangian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

video was cool, but did he have to repeat everything he said 4 times?

                  [–]gphjr14 51 points52 points  (8 children)

Also those large jawbreakers if you throw them In the freezer for an hour then drop them in hot tap water they’ll crack open.

                  [–]1107rwf 60 points61 points  (4 children)

Where were you back in 1992 when I needed this information?? My tongue is still sore from trying to lick my way to the center of that thing!

                  [–]gphjr14 21 points22 points  (3 children)

                  92? I would've been 5 so kindergarten probably lol.

                  [–]YogiToeLock 12 points13 points  (2 children)

                  [–]assm0nk 26 points27 points  (2 children)

the coconuts can also be jawbreakers if you throw them at someone's face hard enough

                  [–]buttastronaut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also if you try to bite them whole

                  [–]gphjr14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah man put it in a tube sock so you can strike twice.

                  [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That may ruin the white fleshy part by sucking the water out of it.

                  [–]NOLAdelta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Me: goes out and buys coconut

                  [–]latecraigy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now you have a giant Eos lip balm in coconut

                  [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn, so the Crystal Coconut does exist

Try this method (no freezer required)

                  https://youtu.be/T9bXoOa1qTg

                  [–]MrFrostyBudds 18 points19 points  (0 children)

                  But those were obviously cut?

                  [–]TlalocVirgie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me and my kids always put them in a plastic bag and drop them off the balcony.

                  [–]Dark0dyssey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toss that coconut ice in a blender and you got yourself a nice treat for a hot day.

                  [–]CorvixyPixy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                  Coconut flavored ice.

                  [–]Night_tunez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                  This looks refreshing af

                  [–]ocmfoa 9 points10 points  (10 children)

                  And ruin the juice.

                  [–]miaowpitt 55 points56 points  (7 children)

It’s actually really nice frozen. You can blend the frozen juice and it becomes like a slurpy like texture. You can also add bits of the coconut flesh in there, so good and refreshing. If you want more of a creamy type drink add in a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream, it’s fantastic.

                  [–]mermaidrampage 14 points15 points  (1 child)

That sounds really really good. I already get a fair amount of free coconuts so definitely gonna try this

                  [–]etuvie27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

                  Username checks out

yea Im doing this and putting rum in it

                  [–]shoeshine23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  That's what I'm thinking!

                  [–]Atte71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i was thinking would be great with frozen pineapple in the blender.

                  [–]ocmfoa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I will take that back only if you’re making cocktails out of it or something else. But the freshness goes away with the solidification so the nutrients.

                  [–]toxicbrew -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also good as a condiment when you fry it up with meats

                  [–]kokahh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you can melt it in the microwave :)

                  [–]thepandabro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

                  Crack open the freezer

                  [–]bluesun_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one in the freezer for two months mine didn't do anything

                  [–]sweetwaterfall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this even counts as a comment, but...really?? Is this true?

That looks super fresh and tasty. I'm thirsty now.

                  [–]jakart3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do that, it taste better when fresh, you can easily crack it with a back of your knife (follow the marked line)

                  [–]bitchybarbie82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tip: Coconut tastes different once it’s been frozen

                  [–]Tree-Nui-Tee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom just smacks em on the ground real hard lol

                  [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fresh frozen coconut water looks yum!

                  [–]dr_angle_dangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly useful knowledge for when you’re stranded on a deserted island and the only appliance you brought from home is your freezer!!! Life hacking children take notes!!

                  [–]SMGcraycray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought you blurred out something but the I realized that that was frozen coconut water

                  [–]BlueberryBitch91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could do with a Pina colada rn

                  Does..does it taste good?

                  [–]llamantha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm watching the TV show Survivor right now and they are literally talking about cracking open coconuts

                  [–]meganburtt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  Amazing tip, thank you!

                  [–]relentless_pma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks so cool, I want to see this. So I just have to buy a coconut and put it in the freezer for a few hours?

                  [–]Recycle_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  And then what?

                  [–]the1stranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the back of a thick knife/cleaver bang on the equator (of coconut) for a quick, clean crack.

                  [–]realdeal64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure wish I could see what's inside that bottom left one. Why censor this?

                  [–]DoodleTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when you're stranded on an island and don't have anything to open a coconut, just pop it in the freezer for a bit.

                  [–]wine_n_mrbean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This life hack brought to you by the author of “No ice? Just freeze water!”

                  [–]mr_jiffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a r/uselesslifehacks? Because I think this would fit there better

                  [–]accidentalprancingmt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this spoil the flavor of the water?

                  [–]tralphaz43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now what do you do with it

                  [–]myoreosmaderfaker 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why is the second picture censored?

                  [–]MrAttorney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not. That is the frozen liquid part of a coconut.

                  [–]CBJKevin91581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  Not really a life hack

                  [–]A55BURGER5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  Amazing

                  [–]accioletter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                  Looks like a giant lychee!

Get the rum, we’re having slushees for breakfast.

Only if they have the water inside it

Now try grinding the flesh while it's like that

                  [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a hammer. The hard outer will break and the soft flesh will be intact

This are clearly mature coconuts though...

                  [–]relentless_pma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a coconut laying in my freezer for 3 days now, but it still has not cracked..whats wrong?

                  [–]rob5i -1 points0 points  (8 children)

Seems like you'd want to contain it in case the expansion happens before the liquid become solid.

Oh and please don't feel obligated to contain your coconut if you disagree. In fact if you disagree put a can of beer in there as well.

...but the expansion only happens because the liquid is becoming solid.

Probably means that if the coconut cracks before ALL of the liquid is frozen

                  [–]hateboss 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Thats not how it works. It freezes from the outside in and likely has to be very close to complete frozen to exert enough force to crack it. So even if it wasn't completely frozen, there would be enough ice thickness to contain the unfrozen portion.

Which is why you should also feel free to freeze cans of soda. Please do that.

The reason that is different is because it's carbonated genius. You know many carbonated coconuts?

                  [–]FlynnScifo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't explaining how it works, just my interpretation of what I thought they meant in original comment

                  [–]slowhand88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but then you have to eat coconut.

                  Woaw cool !!

They desperately need a freezer on Motunui.

If you fill them with water
