You better wear eye protection when trying this at home, guys!

[–]ShoddyActive 491 points492 points  (16 children)

and thick rubber gloves and closed toed shoes when you inevitably shatter one around your kitchen floor.

I came here to say that with my luck, it would shatter and I’d loose an eye.

    [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (4 children)

They are solid not hollow, why would it burst? Im not calling you out im asking for someone to explain it to me bc idk shit about science

    [–]andayk 19 points20 points  (1 child)

From my limited and generic knowledge on the topic: Rapid and great chages of temperature can introduce great internal tension in solid materials. And whenever great tensions suddenly relieve there might occur shattering and parts flying around.

I personally would put on protective gear, whenever I do anything like this.

    [–]BrothelWaffles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I broke a glass ashtray this way years ago. Was burning stuff in it like stupid kids do and I forget what the last thing I burned was but the flames were a bit bigger than I expected so I poured cold water on it and it cracked from the center out. Most of the bottom was shattered to oblivion and the thick outer ring was in a few pieces as well.

    [–]BushWeedCornTrash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    Look up "prince Rupert's drop".

    [–]thatawesomeguydotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some may have air or moisture trapped inside.

    [–]Dinguhlingadingdong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now go try it with a handful of marbles in a glass soda bottle.

    [–][deleted] 227 points228 points  (16 children)

    Do they explode at all?

    [–]incestuous_wild_boar 237 points238 points  (10 children)

I did this with glass bottes when I was a kid. Some exploded right away, others stayed in one piece but if you hit on them even with a very light amount if force they would shatter into a million pieces.

    [–]tmack3 83 points84 points  (0 children)

My brother sliced his hand open when a bottle smashed after he put hot wax in it

    [–]TheTallGuy0 72 points73 points  (1 child)

This is basically a crude version of tempered glass. Purposely introduce stress in the glass to allow for small glass segments on breakage.

    [–]BigBobby2016 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nice! Came here to say this, delighted to see it here already.

You have to use Molten Glass to make a Prince Rupert's Drop.

The tail is also essential in the definition.

      [–]Oznog99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not. PRD and tempered glass is a perfect envelope of an outer layer stressed in very high tension and glass underneath is in compression.

If you in any way damage any of the envelope, the entire thing will pop. It must. It's like a water balloon. It wouldn't matter how gently you cut off a bit of the balloon. Even if you somehow froze time, cut the balloon, and turned time back on, the balloon will pop.

      [–]drmariomaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We used to do these as kids and they didn't explode with flying shrapnel, but we'd do ten at a time or so, and at least two would usually shatter. A few might shed bits within the first bit of use, but a few would be stable enough to last a long time. I think I still have a few around here thirty years later.

Omg please tell me this is a reference to the youtube marble racing channel! My husband came in from work one day and caught me watching it and at first he made fun of me (jokingly) but then he got hooked!

      [–]Shattered_Visage 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Absolutely. I had never even heard about it before the quarantine but now I'm completely hooked. I still can't believe some dude in his house has the same production quality as ESPN.

      [–]longbathlover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right!? His speaking, the way he broadcasts, is so perfect. It's so soothing and captivating to watch and listen.

      [–]50v3r31gnZA 181 points182 points  (28 children)

Look the diamond industry gets a lot of flack and rightly so.

You know how awesome it is to work on diamond jewelry? Heat it as much as you want even untill bright red, don't have to worry about flux or heat deviations, dump it in water or acid to clean boom work done.

Cz, emeralds, garnets and to a lesser extent sapphires and rubies all require meticulous heat control and wil break/shatter/chip if dunked while red hot.

      [–]Ultraballer 136 points137 points  (21 children)

So you’re saying I pay more money for the easier to work with gems? Seems a little backwards to me

      [–]waiha 216 points217 points  (20 children)

Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds are all rarer than Diamonds in nature. You pay more for Diamonds because of De Beers.

      [–]kuroimakina 140 points141 points  (17 children)

It’s even worse than that. Diamonds are pretty easy to manufacture. They’re literally just carbon arranged in a tight lattice from heat and pressure. Carbon is VERY abundant. But, again, De Beers. They lock down the diamond market hard, and use smear tactics or frivolous lawsuits to shut down any competition, including making manufactured diamonds have a stigma of being “fake” and “your spouse doesn’t love you unless he gets a real diamond.” Etc.

      [–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

Thankfully that’s starting to change. There’s some startups with some major investment firm backing who have a good way to mass produce laboratory diamonds. They’re still getting the process up and running but their goal is to basically kill the diamond mining industry.

They’re also the reason you might have seen more ads from de beers about on grown diamonds the past couple years.

      [–]forzal 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Aren't Svarowski crystals lab made diamonds?

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are lab made but aren’t diamonds as far as I can tell. I think they’re a proprietary glass material.

      [–][deleted] 72 points73 points  (1 child)

That is so sad. I proposed to my husband, and subsequently got to pick out my own engagement ring. Precisely because of the the De Beers bullshit I picked out a rather large London blue topaz for a fraction of what a tiny diamond would have cost us.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're london blue topaz engagement ring twins! I like that people seem more and more accepting of alternative stones as time goes on. It's a very personal choice. And it can be anything at all!

      [–]BatteryPoweredBrain 15 points16 points  (8 children)

My wife purchased a 1.5 carat man made diamond because we chose not to have an engagement ring. I think she paid $600 for the stone and another $200 for the setting. It is phenomenal. Only way anyone has been able to tell that it isn't a natural stone, it is flawless. She has had a TON of jewelers look at it and claim how wonderful it is. She love the thing, and it was realistic in price and it made her happy. Can't complain.

Unfortunately the company that made them was purchased by another company and doesn't sell to the public anymore. I don't know for sure who purchased them, but I suspect it was DeBeers.

      [–]ralyn12 9 points10 points  (7 children)

Pretty sure it is not a diamond, even lab made. Lab made diamond is cheaper but it is not gonna that cheap

      [–]TimeSlipperWHOOPS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Especially at that size and quality color and clarity. No way. It'll get there probably but it's not at THAT point.

      [–]BatteryPoweredBrain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At the time, it was. I think that's why they got purchased; they were a heck of a lot cheaper. It it was a man made one, must have been 10 years ago now. I did go search today for them and yeah, a lot more expensive now.

      [–]Alt_dimension_visitr 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I bought a moissanite stone about 10 years ago. Looked at prices a year ago and they have quadrupled. It may have been that cheap then.

      [–]ralyn12 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yeah pretty sure it was a moissanite, not a lab made diamond. A lot of us could not distinguish them anyway

      [–]waiha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

      Truth, my friend.

      [–]Thunderous-Wizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      I mean

I go to level 11 and the diamonds often are nowhere to be found

Plenty of gold and redstone though /s

      [–]UDPviper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not disturb Lucius De Beers!

      [–]moonie223 2 points3 points  (1 child)

      But diamonds burn...

      [–]beard_tan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And will also spiderweb like this if it's exposed to extreme thermal shock...

      [–]QueenSlapFight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Flak.

      [–]7355135061550 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      Don't diamonds combust?

      [–]50v3r31gnZA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eventually they do get hot enough that the polished facets lose their lustre.

I have seen gold melt before that happens.

      [–]LoftyGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At about 1,000 F diamonds catch fire.

      [–]not_falling_down 78 points79 points  (4 children)

This was a thing when I was in elementary school. There was a lot of homemade jewelry that used marbles cracked this way.

I did this in science class as my experiment, to demonstrate expansion and contraction from heat and cold. Meanwhile, a guy at the next desk was doing something that involved heating stuff in a test tube, and had the brilliant idea of cooling the test tube in my ice water, with predicable results.

      [–]marshbb 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I remember this fad, we called them fried marbles

      [–]lyseeart 9 points10 points  (1 child)

You'd think he would have learned something from your demonstration lol

      [–]not_falling_down 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you'd think. Especially since I had already cracked a few marbles before he did that. Unclear on the Concept, I suppose.

      [–]Oznog99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's a borosilicate test tube, that might work. Near zero thermal expansion so it does not undergo mechanical stress from uneven temp shock

      [–]WheelsUpInThirty 27 points28 points  (6 children)

In the late 60's/early 70's this type of jewelry was all the rage. I remember my parents buying a blue cracked marble necklace for me to give to my first grade teacher.

      [–]LanceFree 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Do you remember Shrinky-dinks? And then later, someone figured out you could cut patterns from a McDonald’s styrofoam container and it would shrink and become hard in the oven? There was also some kind of plastic on a straw which could be inflated and it smelled horrible.

      [–]ugghhh_gah 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Bubbl-oons! I wasn’t around in the 60s or 70s but I grew up playing with that awful-smelling paste that turned into pretty bubbles!

      [–]Lukaroast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The smell of that shit was oddly intoxicating

      [–]WheelsUpInThirty 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sure! But never heard about the Mickey-D styrofoam. Gack!

      [–]LanceFree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine cutting a heart shape and poking a hole with a pencil. After it shrunk, attach a chain and have a necklace every girl would die for.

      [–]bjornwjild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're they hoping it would slit her throat?

      [–]unicornheabutt[S] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

As a few people have rightly mentioned, if you're going to attempt this, be careful, wear eye protection, all that good stuff. You should be good!

      [–]reidell_iwanachi 13 points14 points  (2 children)

      I have a feeling it's very fragile

      [–]Cethin_Amoux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely is. You've more or less "shocked" the marble at this point, and the integrity of it is very compromised. Definitely cool looking, but it won't last very long if it's moved or hit a bunch.

      [–]ianindy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can also boil the marbles in water and then run cold water over them. No flame needed. My grandmother used to do this and decorate her plants/planters with them.

      [–]reztek2 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The important question how would this marble perform under marbula 1 conditions?

      [–]earlgonefishn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's already lapped Mary I believe.

      [–]balsaaaq 11 points12 points  (1 child)

We did this on a cookie sheet in the oven. Safest way

      [–]Phan216 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      How long, what temp?

      [–]Schmoreshmoosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But how well does it race?

      [–]Qwardian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad made me a couple of these as a kid using a blow torch. It was cool when he did it. First time I tried to use one it shattered when it hit the other marble. Still cool.

          [–]pandaxpaws 2 points3 points  (7 children)

If I had to guess I would say about 25/35 in a bag for 4 dollars. They're all about the same size with one massive one, but they also all look fairly similar with the two swirly bits in the middle not clear glass ones which I would think would be better for jewelry. The shipping would definitely be a massive pain in the ass though, I didn't think of that part. (Also I'm not a marble expert, my son is just obsessed with them)

              [–]AbbotThoth 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Congratulations, you have mildly interested me. I thank you for this, and hope that my exuberant outburst has not shattered your marble.

Quarantine, or a very modern realization about how and why they did the kinds of science they did in the 1700s.

Next thing you know someone is going to post about how they were trying alchemy.

              [–]jesus_chestnut 16 points17 points  (5 children)

yeah, the temperature difference is too big and it cracks since it’s made of glass. if you coat it with some epoxy, it’d probably hold it together and still look cool if the layer is thin enough (depends on the epoxy)

edit: epoxy* and fuck english pronounciation

              [–]jean_erik 0 points1 point  (4 children)

              [–]gitarzan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We used to do this when I was a kid. We’d play marbles with them and try to bust the other guys marble with ours. Prob a 50/50 chance of either breaking apart.

              [–]megaboto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did with a glass bottle as a kid. Broke in my hands. Fascinated by the fact that I could break it with my hands only, I did. I've got a scar on my hand now and an lucky to still have my left thumb

              [–]reverendsteveii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

good to see quarantine is going well for you

              [–]CloudiusWhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is borderline one of those posts 4chan used to make about mixing chemicals to make crystals when you blow on it with a straw , while really making chlorine gas. I say borderline because it's only missing the encouragement to try it at home.

              [–]Blackbear0101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what happens SOMETIMES, and sometimes it will explode in a mechanical explosion, projecting shards of glass just a bit slower than sound everywhere.

              [–]bubbalooski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I know what I’m doing this afternoon.

              [–]jonny_vegas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did this as a kid all the time. I however remember it backwards. You throw your marbles in the freezer. take them out in an hour and throw them into hot water. boom...cool cracks.

              [–]kjuuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But it looks very nice.. even kind luxury 😁

              60's kids remember this.

              [–]yesitsyourmom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! We all had big bags of marbles and did this all the time. Put in oven on cookie sheet then drop in water. We thought they were beautiful! I never had any explode. I think one broke while I was shooting it. Such fun. I still have my bag of marbles. Good times!

This is really cool, and btw happy cake day!

              [–]AtopMountEmotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be damned careful of your eyes, my friend. A bit hotter or a preexisting crack could result in that glass seeming to explode.

One marble to rule them all

How long did you keep the marble over the flame before dropping it in water?

              [–]AKA_OneManArmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be carful doing this. Mine have exploded in the past.

I was sitting here waiting for the video of this to continue...

              [–]thewholerobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. that's what happens when YOU do it. I'm sure I would screw this up.

Can’t wait to see this race in Jelly’s races

              [–]bellcurve7 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So I’ve read in the comments how the marble is mostly compromised and can break easily after this is done. What if you dipped it in resin? Would that preserve the cracks and keep it from falling apart?

              [–]MotherTheresasTaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yes, but it’d be nearly impossible to keep it perfectly round

              [–]Jatzy_AME 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shh, my brother and I traded those "super rare marbles" in school back in the 90's, don't let the secret out!

              [–]BraveEguana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most beautiful thing I have seen all day. Thank you for this!

              [–]cbolser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to do this as kids. Dump a bag of marbles into boiling water for a bit, then immerse them in ice water. The crackling sound was immediate and loud.

              [–]luckydawg326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can we talk about the image quality though🤯

              [–]Heavy_Messing1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

              Was the flame ordinary too?

              [–]pietromj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like the trick where you tell someone to put a ball of aluminium foil in the microwave to make it smooth

But hold your marbles 'cause here goes the cold water

              [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may have been the one stupid thing I didn't do as a kid.

              [–]muskitt-boon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wait til you see what happens when you use an extraordinary marble!

              Aaaaaand I'm trying this tonight

Thia isn't like the aluminum ball thing is? I don't want my house to blow up

              [–]Mufasa_Has_Died 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to find a marble, and btw how long do you hold it over with flame for

              [–]LoftyGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

              Called "crazing".

              [–]KiltedTailorofMaine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, perhaps 40 years ago, these were called 'fried marbles'!

              [–]WillisPWallfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We called them Fried Marbles. We would heat them up in a cast iron frying and then a pot of cool water. They were always good for trading.

              [–]S_E_P1950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

              Crazy.

              [–]Redraven256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg!!! I gotta do this! How long was it on the flame?

              [–]Jtef 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You're lucky it didn't burst and fly right into your eye.

              [–]thx1138a 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When the glass hits your eye

              Like a big pizza pie

              That's a marble

              [–]ImmortalMischief 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you put it in cold water then immediately hold it over a flame so I can see what it looked like originally?

              [–]xmaster90 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thank you OP for this idea.. :)

I got a bunch of old marbles out of the shed and started experimenting...
Some advice for the people who also want to do this:

Step One: Get safety material (goggles/gloves/protection against heat)
Step B: Get a bunch of marbles (of course)
Step 3: Get a heat source (i used my kitchen stove)
Step four: Get something to hold the marbles (i used a pair of tongs)
Step 5: Get a bowl with ice cold water
Step f: Grab your marble gentle with the tongs and hold it above the fire, use a timer to get to a sweet spot (for me it was 3 minutes)
Step $iX: When the timer hits put the marble instantly into the bowl

Step 7: Let it sit there for a couple of minutes (let say five minutes)

Step eighT: You have your awesome marbles :)

              Enjoy!

Boil for same result, no flame, only spoons needed.
