[–]ChalkButter 182 points183 points  (102 children)

Does it still work?

[–]gnaark[S] 26 points27 points  (20 children)

Yes of course, it doesn't even look that used.

[–]ChalkButter 16 points17 points  (15 children)

Make some coffee with it, tell us if the coffee magically takes on an 'aged' flavor

[–]gnaark[S] 20 points21 points  (11 children)

It makes some coarsish coffee which is perfect for my French press. The coffee tastes pretty good too!

[–]pourmorton 9 points10 points  (5 children)

I bet the grind is adjustable. There might be something inside the drawer area that will tighten or loosen the allowance between the burrs (likely conical burrs) inside. Sometimes they adjust at the crank shaft and handle assembly up top.

[–]Homer69 3 points4 points  (4 children)

It looks like it has the same type of adjustment the hario grinders have. You can see it on the top uber the handle

[–]gnaark[S] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Yes! I had no idea. I changed the "settings" on that and it produced much coarser coffee: https://i.imgur.com/eBRpQEf.jpg

Now the problem is that I have now idea which setting will produce what. I'll have to try them all and find a way to make them.

[–]driverdan 9 points10 points  (2 children)

That's a pretty uneven grind. Seems like it's not a very good grinder.

[–]theonewhomknocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The further apart the conical burrs are set, the coarser the grind. If it's set this wide (which it's not meant to be) large and small pieces alike will fall into the bottom as the beans are ground. If you set it to a finer grind it will be much more uniform and consistent.

[–]gnaark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the "biggest" setting I think, it was just to show.

I played around with it this morning and it produced this: https://imgur.com/a/kNW5r Much more even.

I still don't understand how this works as it doesn't seem to go bigger/smaller as I turn the selection, it seems to be random.

[–]gnaark[S] 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Will do. I got it from my parents over the holidays, I'm going to get some coffee beans as we speak.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Well now I feel stupid with my great-grandmother's electric coffee grinder.

Edit: just remembered I have one that looks identical to your, except painted over, at my seaside cabin. Now I need to check if it works.

[–]gnaark[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I actually remember your post on that.

[–]hohosaregood 0 points1 point  (3 children)

It looks pretty used but more like 20 years old rather than 120 years old.

[–]gnaark[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I dated it based on the logo used. Peugeot only used that logo from 1858 to 1900 so my reasoning was that it's at least 117 years old.

Now I see that this logo is used on their new models as well, so I'm not sure.

What I know is that it wasn't bought by me nor my parents, so it's at least 50+ years old.

[–]Ukabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just made my café with one of those this morning !

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (5 children)

The bicycle maker?!

[–]Gregory_Pikitis 50 points51 points  (4 children)

Also the ladies undergarments maker, the artillary maker, and the car maker.

[–]glitchvdub 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Don't forget salt and pepper grinders.

[–]Sirico 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We still use them they cost a lot

[–]GHONX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And coffee grinders

[–]spirito_santo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have an old hand plane (you know, for planing wood) that had a Peugeot blade.

[–]Weaponsgradeirony 65 points66 points  (8 children)

Old Top Gear (CHM) did a great piece on the very interesting history of Peugeot for those who are interested! (Sorry it's a dailymotion, not a youtube video).

[–]halfblind-_x 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What I came here expecting to see

[–]nocommemt 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This episode is also on Netflix (US) if anyone cares to watch it there.

[–]AllHipoCrates 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I looked it up and it's series 22, Episode 5.

www.netflix.com/title/70140457

That looks to the series, couldn't figure out how to link directly to the episode.

[–]nliausacmmv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's now New Old Top Gear.

[–]killingbanana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The french impression was surpisingly good lol

[–]dboy120 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is this really considered old topgear now?

[–]Weaponsgradeirony 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say so. New top gear is with LeBlanc (I think) after C,H,M went to Amazon.

Maybe it would be more accurate to say: new-old Top Gear, because there was also a Top Gear before Hammond and eventually May joined.

[–]EwonRael 49 points50 points  (10 children)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They also make a pepper grinder like that - I have one and it's amazing.

[–]Mr_Abe_Froman 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Well, that answers that question. And it's fairly reasonably priced.

[–]manys 24 points25 points  (4 children)

When I looked into them several years ago, one thing everybody agreed on is that they reliably leak grounds and coffee dust.

[–]Mr_Abe_Froman 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Thanks for the heads-up. I have been considering getting a better burr grinder, so I'll probably end up getting one by Baratza.

[–]manys 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The Sausage King of Chicago should have the best!

[–]Mr_Abe_Froman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your understanding.

[–]SMIDSY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that a manual coffee grinder that costs over $100 is reasonably priced. I'm sure the quality is there, but you can get a plenty reliable electric grinder for $30.

[–]rakut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found one at one of those Goodwills where you pay by weight, so I got it for about $0.10!

[–]TheAdAgency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this older model is far more attractive.

Found on eBay.

[–]pixelatedcombustion 53 points54 points  (7 children)

But they couldn't make non-leaking head gasket for my 207.

[–]chinkostu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TU engined? Leaking oil from the front between the head and block, near the alternator?

[–]shishdem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what engine make you got?

[–]Erikwar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or make sure the injectors don't sweat oil every 2k km om my 308 HDI

[–]BBisWatching 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I have the salt and pepper grinders. They work well, had them for 8 years and use the pepper almost daily and they still work like new.

[–]OtulGib 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Wow, my grandfather had one like that and I remember helping him grind up his morning brew more than a few times. Thanks for sharing!

[–]Woodie626 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me too, he gave me his. He just goes to 7-11 now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandfather had one too and we used it to grind up pepper

[–]OBrzeczyszczykiewicz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

had one too. loved the smell

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Anyone that finds this amusing should watch the Top Gear episode (I believe it was in Season 22) about the Peugeot brand. It's absolutely hilarious.

[–]1wrx2subarus 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Here's the weblink for Top Gear Season 22 on Peugeot. Enjoy! http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2if9gy

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for contributing! :D

[–]k987654321 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Maniac!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found what I was looking for. Shall we get a drink? :D

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two similar coffee grinders, same construction different brands, and while they have lasted for a long time they're also pretty terrible for grinding coffee.

Unless this model is a lot better this is a buy it for life and don't use it than anything else.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Peugeot pepper grinder is a work of art.

[–]VonPursey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Peugeot still makes high quality non-automotive products. Got a really nice salt and pepper grinder set from them.

[–]Gimly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the same family who created the two companies but as far as I know it's two different companies that are not part of the same holding or have anything in common other from being created by people of the same family.

[–]Hooch180 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents have exactly the same one in their kitchen. I never though it is that old.

....

It is not that hard to imagine when I take into account the fact that they found it in the flat in the building from 1850.

[–]sparks1990 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Has it been used consistently throughout it's entire life?

[–]gnaark[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This I'm not sure, I would assume it as been fairly used when it was bought but then less and less with the passing years...

[–]relationship_tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My grandpa had one from his father and one of them used it continually from the turn of the last century until my grandpa died in the late 90's. It's been sitting on my dad's mantle since because he doesn't drink coffee and I have a good burr grinder but I imagine if I cleaned it up and oiled the moving parts it would work no problem.

It wasn't this brand, but they all were basically the same (Great quality). I know my friends have one too, passed from their grandparents. Only one uses it and it still works fine.

[–]microfortnight 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Kinda looks like the one in "Dances With Wolves" when Kevin Costner was getting the natives to try coffee

[–]858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just watched Dances With Wolves the other day and saw one of these.

[–]PUTINsTiTs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can we see the insides ?

[–]gnaark[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

oh hai friendo (as always, bananas for scale)

[–]gnaark[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Nice! Any idea on how old is yours?

[–]barrygibb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My parents own one as well. I'll see if they have some more background info on it, if you'd like?

[–]gnaark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure, share!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

1898, IIRC. Might be off a year or two.

[–]wannabe_brazilian 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Their pepper grinders are awesome!

[–]Roundaboutsix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their cars never sold well in the US but they were popular with college professors and grad students. My ex-brother-Jon-law swore by them and owned (and worked on) quite a few of them.

[–]BizCaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally had to do a double-take

http://i.imgur.com/8UAd1MF.jpg

[–]Tall_Mickey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess they always knew about gearing. :-)

[–]bubble_joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the reason "moulin" (mill) is still a slang for engine in french.

[–]beesneedlovetoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! We have one of those we use it to grind flax seed on top of our oatmeal in the mornings. :D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where can I buy that?

[–]gnaark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peugeot still makes some or on eBay. There are a few links in the comments.

[–]TommiH 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I have the exact same model!

[–]Tratix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a coworker that got an old camera?

[–]GreenThumbSeedling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one that looks like this! It takes a long time to grind but works really well

[–]cyrilio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May grandfather has four grinder. Two of which are also Peugeot.
I believe three of them are for coffee and one is used to grind spices (or maybe it was pepper). Unfortunately I don't know how old these are, but I'm pretty sure they're all from before the second world war.

[–]BallardLockHemlock 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've been hunting for one of these in antique stores forever.

[–]samthunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remembered my dad has one of these somewhere in his basement. I bet there's some hipster (most likely in San Francisco or Portland) who would pay $$$ I work in a wood-shop...now just gotta wait for dad to die, steal it, refurbish it and retire on the auction money.

[–]karibjerseygirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peugeot coffee grinders are still sold new. Hoping the quality is the same as the original.

[–]cab4656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty interesting what some auto companies used to make. The original oven in my dad's house was made by GM.

[–]CashewGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peugeot is tremendous good at making basically anything. Right now they're tremendously good at making bad cars.

[–]selfawaresarcasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had no idea that these were coffee grinders. We had a few used as decorations on our side tables growing up. The more you know.

[–]kodemage 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are you sure it's not a pepper grinder? They are famous for making pepper grinders.

[–]gnaark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents have a couple other ones and they use it to grind pepper.

I think the pepper grinder is smaller though.

[–]stonerstevethrow 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i can't believe this. i work for a moving company. NYE i was moving a guy from house to house, and among his possessions was one of these things and an old canon camera. he gave one of my coworkers the grinder and he gave me the camera. both are still in working shape. the camera is at least 35 years old and the grinder looks exactly the same as that. i just posted a thread about the story this morning. are you my coworker?

[–]gnaark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No but that's a nice story :)

[–]mapetitechoux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of my Italian grandma (Nonna). She would make us grind coffee in one to keep us busy. :)

[–]ZumaBird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a German company called Zassenhaus that used to make this exact same type of grinder - same size, mechanism, build quality (or better), little drawer and everything.

However, the grinding burrs they made were much, much better than Peugeot's for grinding coffee. For whatever reason, Germans always seem to make the best coffee grinders (Mahlkonig, anyone?)

If you can find an older one, I highly recommend picking it up. Beware though: the name has been bought in more recent years and I can't speak to the quality of the more recently produced products.

[–]xladiciusx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some high-end salt and pepper grinders from Peugeot. They know what's up.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where does the keurig cup go?

[–]ImUsuallyThisStupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, that's the coffee grinder from Dances with Wolves!

[–]Grazfather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a peugeot pepper mill and it absolutely demolishes peppercorns

[–]Providencii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peugeot actually made lots of stuff befor e they made cars, they talk about it in an old episode of Top Gear

[–]rocketwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, I think of them as the bicycle company first.

[–]cool_hand_luke 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Could you post a link to where I can buy it... you know, so I can buy it for life?

[–]gnaark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few links in the comments already.

[–]lucy_inthessky 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are you in Europe? Do you frequent flea markets?

[–]gnaark[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I got it from l'y family that lives in Europe. This was most likely passed on in family though.

[–]lucy_inthessky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I see those at a lot of markets out here.

[–]ogghi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Peugeot pepper mill is of out standing quality! Much better then a lot of their cars...

[–]Icanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a pepper grinder made by peugeot. That thing must be indestructable!

[–]ATCaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad has that exact grinder. It was given to him by his dad who was an aircraft technician in WWII. He received it from a guy in the RAF who he became good friends with as a birthday gift because apparently my grandfather was one hell of a coffee fiend.

[–]play_on_swords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way to highlight the unused electrical socket in the background

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pegeot made some of the best bikes around.. I've had the pleasure of restoring a few from late 70s/early 80s and still going strong. Some of them almost completely original components too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

deleted What is this?

[–]shiki_present 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother has one of these!! $2 at an op shop

[–]Terptacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't use this for coffee
