[–]CptWaffIe 310 points311 points  (24 children)

I play battlefield 4 with a hambone, he’s in his mid 50’s, a doctor, and one of the nicest guys you’ll meet. I asked how he came up with hambone and he said he has always found it funny that if you got four strikes in a row while bowling it’s called a hambone.

[–]PrisonerV 114 points115 points  (12 children)

I used to play World of Warships quite a lot. I was "the kid" at 47. I played with retired guys from all around the world.

[–]CptWaffIe 117 points118 points  (10 children)

I am 18 and I was talking to hameboner the other night and he was asking me when I go back to high school. I told him I have already started taking college classes over the summer and he was so surprised, saying but you just got your license like a couple of months ago. I started playing with him when I was 14 so I see why he was surprised. Just growing up right before his eyes.

[–]Sparkeh 52 points53 points  (6 children)

I joined a raiding guild in World of Warcraft when I was 12, and everyone knew I was really young. The guild disbanded a year after I joined, but I still play with a few of them. On the first of the month I joined Discord and said, “Guys! In two months 6 days I turn 21” and our old raid leader responds with, “Oh god and I already felt bad about turning 50 this year. Now my internet son is gonna be able to drink this year.”

[–]CptWaffIe 17 points18 points  (4 children)

That’s awesome! When I first started playing with all these old guys none of them believed me when I told them how young I was. After playing with older gents I have gotten to where I can’t play with kids my age, just such a better experience playing with older people. I love listening to their stories and experiences.

[–]Sparkeh 20 points21 points  (2 children)

My guild used to be like my internet family. My guild leader was my internet dad, our raid healer was my internet mom, and then one of our warlocks became my internet mom after our healer left. The main tank became my internet brother and the off tank was the crazy uncle that would pvp with me. It was crazy playing with a lot of older people because they genuinely cared about how I was doing growing up. I miss a lot of them, but growing up with the ones I did was amazing because they were always willing to give me advice when I was having problems growing up(like girls and dealing with depression).

My mom was skeptical to let me go to the guild meet up when they went to Blizzcon that year (I couldn’t go because it was super expensive but I lived really close to Blizzcon), but after meeting them she was relieved to know I played with people who cared about me even though we had never met other than hearing voices in ventrillo

[–]CptWaffIe 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Most people don’t understand the bonds you make with online friends, especially with ones you play with for years.

[–]Tigerbait2780 34 points35 points  (5 children)

I've only ever heard it from Will Ferrell in that SNL bit

[–]CallMeRydberg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say that hat is way too cool for your grandma, but she's rockin it.

[–]DarthBane92[S] 2417 points2418 points  (86 children)

I got it for her for Christmas a few years ago, with a battery pack. Since then, my grandpa started too, so I better get him one.

[–]Zzziglar 1214 points1215 points  (69 children)

Love how your grandpa screen name is ‘hambone’ 😂

[–]the_palici 45 points46 points  (1 child)

Good ol' Hambone Fakenamington

[–]Votten123 66 points67 points  (1 child)

So he started after her and is now closer to level 38 than she is? Your grandpa been putting some work in.

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Bro I have that hat too and I love it!

No shelter from the storm!

[–]The_Jordan 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Grandpa has even gone harder at it than grandma since then! Looks like hes got her by a million XP or so.
Your grandma looks way cooler in that hat than I do btw. I LOVE that they're Instinct too.

[–]JonSnue 45 points46 points  (1 child)

I don’t know if Pokémon apparel can be too cool for anyone.

[–]areywings 2309 points2310 points  (236 children)

They have only 4 friends! They need more friends! Let's add them! Give us their code so we can request ^

[–]DarthBane92[S] 3044 points3045 points  (216 children)

They said it was fine:

Grandma: 9609 6342 2802

Grandpa: 8776 8115 4427

[–]I-Chase-Vans 2453 points2454 points  (34 children)

You better warn them that a tsunami of friend requests is heading their way.

[–]RookJameson 345 points346 points  (11 children)

I just tried to add them, but it says they are already maxed out on friends 😂

[–]JimmiRustle 820 points821 points  (11 children)

[–]ChakaZG 30 points31 points  (1 child)

[–]dblink 49 points50 points  (3 children)

If they want to come to Pokemon Go fest next year hit me up, I live right at Lincoln Park and chances it will be hosted there again. All 4 of my grandparents are dead and I would love to show your gparents around and help them out.

[–]Shalhoub 88 points89 points  (1 child)

This guy is trying to steal your grandparents...

[–]Extra_Taco_SaucePlayStation 29 points30 points  (4 children)

[–]Quicco 33 points34 points  (6 children)

[–]Ghi102 10 points11 points  (1 child)

The portwine in Portugal is out of this world compared to whatever I manage to find around here. And about a fifth of the price

[–]Jimmy6shoes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like wine and Pokémon! Give me a glass of that Muk wine :)

[–]HeresAnUpvoteForYa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[–]atom138 134 points135 points  (8 children)

Hambone1942 is the most hilariously wholesome and cliche grandpa username ever.

[–]NerdEternal 1127 points1128 points  (103 children)

Instinct! Wohoo! There were actually 14 of us all along!

[–]XeroAnarian 353 points354 points  (18 children)

Our numbers may be low, but we all know our bird would beat the other two in a competitive environment. Zapdos is legit.

[–]TMF238 188 points189 points  (10 children)

How ironic, the worst team is represented by the best bird

[–][deleted] 116 points117 points  (1 child)

Instinct or extinct

[–]VIOLENTLYVerbs 54 points55 points  (4 children)

Instinct has character. People who picked instinct know exactly why they did what they did :)

[–]DrScitt 34 points35 points  (2 children)

Can confirm. All my friends and I are Instinct, and while our numbers may be low, we are all happy with our choice

[–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (30 children)

15 ;)

[–]WhoMD21 42 points43 points  (1 child)

There are dozens of us. DOZENS!

[–]ClarityDotA 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lol back when I played here were only like 10 of us in the entire city and my friend and I would be in our car zooming from one gym to another because we couldn’t keep up with the others taking our gyms from us

[–]sotech 26 points27 points  (27 children)

I'm not very familiar with Pokémon stuff, what's the closest Hogwarts house analog to Instinct?

[–]pHScale 136 points137 points  (14 children)

Mystic is Ravenclaw, Valor is Gryffindor, Instinct is Hufflepuff, and Rocket is Slytherin.

[–]MillerAdam14 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer

[–]meistermichi 32 points33 points  (1 child)

It's just the best team.

[–]DarthBane92[S] 727 points728 points  (19 children)

Thanks to all of you for making my grandparents' afternoon. We were hanging out with them this afternoon and listening to them talk about their daily routine and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to brag about how awesome my grandparents are. My grandma insisted on getting her hat and the mugs my SiL painted for them.

My grandma has been reading all your comments after I showed her how to find the post. She even made a Reddit account so she could reply to a few questions, but seems not to be able to do so because of anti-spam protections for new accounts.

They are thrilled with just getting all the requests. My grandma said she was accepting all the requests, but my grandpa said that he was going to go through and accept the ones that looked interesting.

We will be getting my grandpa a matching hat for his birthday.

Edit: Wow! Thank you for the gold! I immediately told my grandparents. My grandma said she always wanted to be famous. She got 89 friend requests while accepting the pending ones, so they might not be able to get to all of them.

Also, for the curious, Hambone was also my grandpa's CB radio handle.

[–]JimmiRustle 432 points433 points  (3 children)

grandpa said that he was going to go through and accept the ones that looked interesting.

Ouch. DE-NIED

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (2 children)

Grandpa is a man of class, not taking just anyone! I love the idea that older people are really getting into the game. I thought it would be the millennial generation doing this. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

[–]Mylela 68 points69 points  (2 children)

Your Grandparents are awesome. I hope I can be as cool as them later in life

[–]HorseAss 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I hope you are looking forward to mind-melt with a slug, because that's what cool kids will be doing in the future for fun ;)

[–]Bachaddict 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He can approve people then look at their profile and delete ones he doesn't want later

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This made me smile :)

[–]I-Chase-Vans 133 points134 points  (9 children)

I love showing up to a raid and seeing the diversity of the players. Pokemon Go really is E for Everyone.

[–]AHumbleBotfly 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The legend of hambone

[–]ShadowArcher90 295 points296 points  (3 children)

This is so pure and wholesome

[–]NChSh 156 points157 points  (2 children)

Hambone

[–]FulcrumTheBrave 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Hamboning will save your life someday.

[–]Don_Cheech 222 points223 points  (53 children)

I haven’t played Pokémon go since that first epic era. Did they fix it? Like can you trade Pokémon ? Are they more sensibly placed in the real world now ?

For a little while there it was perfect- then they kinda just fucked it up

[–]Durzaka 196 points197 points  (28 children)

The game is MUCH better than it was on launch. You can trade pokemon now (only in immediate area of you tho, right now).

But, that said. if you live in the middle of nowhere, the game is still unforgiving for spawns.

[–]iDontRagequit 92 points93 points  (21 children)

Wellllll the game will never be as good as it was at launch (the first two weeks before the global release when there was actual pokemon tracking) but its the best it's been since then.

[–]Atomskie 75 points76 points  (17 children)

Pokemon tracking was the best. Now you pokestop track, and that is much less fun. I do understand why they had to get rid of it though with the trespassing and sneaking onto military sites and the like.

[–]iDontRagequit 63 points64 points  (5 children)

I think the problem was just the fact that the servers couldn't handle the load of tracking the distance of pokemon for so many players. My biggest gripe about the game is its developer, it feels like Niantic wasn't ready for the game's popularity and they are still playing catch up.

The app feels like a beta indie game with so many bugs and loading problems, it seems like Niantic is more of an augmented reality research company than a game developer.

[–]lolsuchfire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. When the game came out it was just kind of a novelty, but since 2018 started its been an actual fun game.

[–]Virus64Switch 249 points250 points  (9 children)

Some short form of what the game is like now:

Trading with friends in close proximity

pokemon are more sensibly distributed

weather affects spawn types (Hot gives fire/rock, rain gives bugs/water, etc)

gyms have raid battles where tough monsters, sometimes legendary, can be fought and caught

gyms are limited to 6 pokemon, you earn up to 50 coins per day for a mon being there, but it loses motivation over time. This keeps gyms cycling.

bonuses of xp/items for daily spins of stops and catching, with a weekly bonus

there's actually a kind of story quest to do, also daily quests earned from spinning stops. These get you bonus items and potentially legendary encounters

EDIT: letters

[–]murdock129 87 points88 points  (5 children)

Also almost all Pokemon up to Gen 3 (with a couple excluded like Shedinja and Smeargle). Also all the Alolan variants of Kanto Pokemon and rumours that Gen 4 will be beginning to release soon.

Evolution Items and TMs

Semi-regular events (a monthly community day where a certain Pokemon's spawn rate goes way up and special moves can be learned on evolution as well as longer events of varying kinds such as the current trading event)

Shinies and 'Lucky Pokemon' (which you power up without using Candy) (Which power up using less Stardust)

Regionals (Annoyingly)

Many more gyms and Pokestops than in 2016 (Level 10 Ingress players can recommend new locations for the Pokestop equivilent in Ingress, which often get made into Pokestops as well)

[–]gormlesser 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lucky Pokémon means reduced Stardust to level up, not candy.

[–]FrankOfTheDank 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lucky Pokémon are only 50% off stardust per power up. You must have gotten the “without candy” from the teasers they did on Twitter that showed a candy discount.

Still very useful, as stardust as a street value higher than cocaine.

[–]JimmiRustle 62 points63 points  (0 children)

It doesn't even crash every 30 minutes anymore

[–]SubParNoir 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah TEAM INSTINCT

[–]Scottz0rz 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I stopped playing a long time ago, but I love the game motivating people, especially older folks and young kids, out and moving around.

Also, team instinct... nice.

[–]RegularWhiteShark 107 points108 points  (6 children)

Now get them both a Switch and the new Pokemon game that's out later this year.

[–]ThatOnePerson 33 points34 points  (2 children)

It's got co-op, let them share one.

[–]cspaced 19 points20 points  (1 child)

For years i worked at a video game retailer, and my favourite was having retired couples come in to buy rpgs to play together.

[–]GatorSixCharlie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Team Instinct, yeah. Awesome, it's amazing how this game has reached so many.

[–]agile52 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My Dad is also super into pokemon go. When I went home on vacation, he carried me through a bunch of raids.

[–]updooter2002 21 points22 points  (0 children)

hell yeah instinct!

[–]Doofnut1of2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

INSTINCT!!!

[–]haakon8855 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Your grandpa kinda looks like a Voltorb

[–]tylerpressey 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Dude your grandparents picked the best team, fuck yeah.

[–]TooShiftyForYou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How nice that they've found this as a great hobby to enjoy together.

[–]FutureDH1089 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yay! Team Instinct! 😍

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (23 children)

What are they going to do when they hit that lvl 40 cap?

[–]Anomuumi 83 points84 points  (18 children)

It's going to take a while if they have been playing from the beginning. The half way point to level 40 is at lvl 37.:)

[–]winston7163 67 points68 points  (12 children)

I thought 92 was the halfway mark.

[–]stalechips 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For $11 it is.

[–]Durzaka 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Theyve barely gotten halfway there. Theyve got PLENTY of game left.

Not to mention Xp doesnt stop at 40. it keeps going up, and people start giving themselves levels based on how many times theyve hit 40 (20 million total XP), 40x2, 40x5, etc. etc.

[–]Wxxz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! #TEAMINSTINCT !!!!

[–]LolzDogz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obviously on the best team.

[–]agirlnamedsenra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, you could crosspost this to r/pokemongo. I’m sure they’d love it!

Also, I love that they play. The game has such a varied base and has introduced me to so many people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Best of luck to them and please post again when they hit level 40!

[–]motorcityMFer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How many friends now!? That's awesome

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Duuuude!!! More Instinct!!

[–]frypincher 6 points7 points  (4 children)

In all seriousness, Pokemon Go ruined my marriage.

[–]5p33di3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If Pokémon Go legitimately ruined your marriage, it was already doomed.

[–]XeroAnarian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And they're Team Instinct, which does my heart good!

[–]Nottzmaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is awesome. Your grandma is looking well.
