Abstract
Efforts to prevent any negative behavioral or health outcome must be theoretically based, begin early in development, occur over time, be appropriately dosed, promote positive relationships, be reinforced across settings, be socio-culturally relevant, and be implemented in skillful ways. Given that few resources are devoted to primary prevention, it is logical to examine whether prevention efforts in one arena can be integrated with another to eaffect multiple outcomes. This approach has been taken with multiple types of interpersonal violence but has not extended to combining historically separate and at times philosophically opposite prevention efforts such as comprehensive sexuality education and prevention of sexual assault perpetration and victimization. Recent developments in this field, based on theory and empirical research, suggest that the two should be combined for maximum effect.
