Abstract

In this chapter Katsourides analyses the history and contemporary challenges of the radical left in Cyprus. Historically, the radical left was identical to the communist party AKEL, a condition that largely applies to date. The extra-parliamentary left was essentially non-existent until the 2000s and remains marginal until today. Although attached to the communist tradition, the party managed to survive the shock of the early 1990s without denouncing communism. Exhibiting advanced learning skills and adaptability, it maintained its status as a significant national political actor continuing to capture approximately one-third of the electorate. Being firmly established in Cypriot society, with strong organisational networks and participation in local level coalitions, it pursued government participation in the 2000s, which proved damaging to the party in all respects. Although hitherto not threatened by other leftist actors, AKEL now faces organisational, programmatic and electoral challenges that touch upon its radical identity.
