Spring Open: Events Celebrate Transparency in Government

Several months into the new administration, Washington, D.C., was treated to events to learn about efforts to increase openness and transparency in government. Some speakers focused on the current situation, highlighting resource challenges that are facing all three branches of government, while others looked to the future and the technology that would enable government to keep up with the expectations of citizens. Here are the highlights of each event.

Free Summer Access to Wolters Kluwer's Federal Developments Knowledge Center

Wolters Kluwer is offering free access through the summer (and possibly longer) to a beta version of its Federal Developments Knowledge Center. This web-based platform tracks and summarizes congressional bills, executive orders, and proposed and final regulations.
Libraries Ready to Code Is Now Accepting Grant Applications
ALA announced that the application period for Libraries Ready to Code grants is now open. Public and school libraries can apply for funding of up to $25,000 to develop programs that promote computer science and computational thinking among young patrons.
IFLA Promotes Successful Global Vision Discussions
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) highlighted the response to its Global Vision Discussion initiative. It notes that so far, 178 librarians from 140 countries have engaged in the discussions.

Magical Moments: Harry Potter at the Library

The last book in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, turned 10 on July 21, 2017. Public libraries have been putting on Harry Potter-themed programming over the past 20 years, and they have no intention of stopping. In this way, they introduce today's children to the series for the first time. And there are other organizations keeping the love alive too. That's the power of Potter.
