Honoring Col. Stephen A. Harrison, MD, FAASLD 🕊️: A pioneer who ‘propelled field of #MASH forward,’ a colleague and a friend 💚 It was with a heavy heart Healio #GI learned of Dr. Harrison’s passing on April 23. Harrison, a key leader in the field of #hepatology, dedicated his life to caring for patients and developing treatments for #liverdisease. He touched the lives of many with a career which spanned 3️⃣0️⃣ years and ranged from numerous #publications to #research and co-founding Summit Clinical Research. It’s a wonder he found time to also serve in the US Army for more than 20 years. News of Dr. Harrison’s passing hit us personally at Healio as he worked extensively with us over the years as a longtime member of the Healio Peer Perspective board and major contributor to the publication. 🌟 New Insights Reinforce the Impact of Women in Medicine 🌟 The recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine brings important data to the forefront again, demonstrating the significant impact women physicians have on healthcare outcomes. According to the research, patients treated by female doctors experienced lower mortality and readmission rates than those treated by male doctors. This critical study is accessible here. https://lnkd.in/gt7JJKcP Regrettably, this is not new information. Previous research has consistently illustrated the exceptional contributions of women in medicine. For instance, studies have shown that female physicians typically achieve lower readmission rates for hospitalized patients, and that surgeries performed by women are associated with better patient outcomes in terms of mortality and morbidity. While it is gratifying to see this data garner attention, there is an underlying disappointment that such findings are not already a fundamental aspect of the healthcare dialogue. As we reflect on these findings, let's reinforce our commitment to a more inclusive healthcare environment. Supporting and promoting the involvement of women in all areas of medicine is crucial, not only for equality but for the efficacy and quality of care we aspire to deliver. The Women in Medicine® nonprofit and the annual Women in Medicine Summit™ are pivotal in addressing these challenges and are actively working to change this narrative by advocating for the retention and empowerment of women in the medical field. These efforts are not just about fairness; they are about leveraging the proven benefits that a diverse workforce brings to patient care. By providing a platform for those who identify as women to connect, learn, and advance, these initiatives not only keep women in medicine but also equip them with the skills to ascend in their careers. Participants and supporters are part of a crucial movement to rebuild our healthcare systems where equity is the standard, not the exception. These efforts underscore the importance of systemic change and the role each of us plays in fostering an equitable healthcare landscape. Let's ensure that the essential role of women in medicine is recognized as a key component of healthcare excellence. And let's not only retain #WomenInMedicine, but lets work towards intentionally sponsoring, promoting, celebrating, amplifying, and empowering them.
