Dartmoor is one of England’s most valuable landscapes. 🌿 Its wonderful mosaic of upland habitats - heathers, grasslands and wetland ecosystems - are vital for producing the food and clean water that sustains us, helping tackle the climate crisis, and protecting many rare species of wildlife. The open landscape has been created and maintained by generations of commoners and farmers, who will continue to play an important role in the future of Dartmoor. Since publication of the Independent Review on Protected Site Management on Dartmoor, Natural England has been working hard to improve communication with farmers to discuss how we can best support them to run viable farm businesses that also work for nature. We strongly support Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' response today to the Independent Review and welcome the creation of a Land Use Management Group, bringing all stakeholders together to pursue a shared vision for Dartmoor. The England Ecosystem Survey is the UK’s largest ever field survey. 🌱 From protected sites and farmland to habitats on the edge of urban areas, this five-year survey will capture data from thousands of sites across the country. The results will help us: 🚦 track the condition of England’s soils, vegetation and landscapes 🏞 make better decisions about how to manage land at a regional and national scale 🌳 help us to report against the 25 Year Environment Plan and improve initiatives like the Environmental Land Management schemes (ELMs) The data collected as part of the England Ecosystem Survey will be made available to anyone who wants to use it under an Open Government Licence. The first release is expected in 2025. Find out more about the information we’ll be collecting and how it will be used in our blog: https://lnkd.in/ebE36p3k 📷 Nick Woodward/Nature England and Charlie Long/Natural England Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew #EnglandEcosystemSurvey #OpenData #SoilHealth #EnvironmentalImprovementPlan

We can’t tackle the nature and climate crisis without trees. 🌳 From individual trees in our towns to agroforestry schemes on farmland, we need a mix of trees and woodlands for nature and for people. Natural England and Forestry Commission are working together to ensure that we deliver tree and woodland cover for wildlife, carbon sequestration and timber resources. Our Chief Executive, Marian Spain, joined the Forestry Commission’s Chief Executive, Richard Stanford, on a visit to Cranborne Estate last Thursday. They reviewed best practice for woodland management and nature recovery and discussed the need for collaboration to address the challenges facing the woodland sector This partnership is one of the ways we are working together to meet the government’s nature recovery targets as set out in the Environmental Improvement Plan. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is now mandatory for small development sites across England. 🏡 This means BNG now applies to residential projects with one to nine dwellings on a site of 1 hectare or less and commercial projects with 1,000 square meters or less of floor space. To help you explore the variety of opportunities for BNG within these small sites, we invited three guest experts to share their insights on: 🏘 methods for creating wildlife habitats within small developments 🌱 strategies for incorporating biodiversity from the get-go 🌳 the role of Habitat Banks in helping achieve BNG challenges Read our blog for tips from Julia Baker, Mott MacDonald, and Emma Toovey, Environment Bank on how to support nature’s recovery while creating healthy, sustainable places where people will want to live. https://lnkd.in/eqyrGUfr #BiodiversityNetGain #SustainableDevelopment #NatureRecovery

Are you involved in marine conservation, or work in the marine environment? 🌊 We’d value your input on our draft Marine Conservation Advice Packages for two new Marine Protected Areas in English waters. These are: 🐟 Wyre Lune Marine Conservation Zone – situated in Morecambe Bay off the Lancashire coast and provides critical habitat for smelt, a rare migratory fish once common in our waters. 🦈Orford Inshore Marine Conservation Zone – located 14km off the Suffolk coast and includes subtidal mixed sediments. These provide an important nursery and spawning area for many fish species including sand eels, and several shark species, foraging seabirds and harbour porpoise. Marine Conservation Zones protect typical, rare or declining habitats and species found in our seas. Together with other types of Marine Protected Areas they contribute to the National Site Network.
