Teacher, Author Julian Jaynes Dies at 77
PRINCETON, N.J., November 25 -- Julian Jaynes, 77, of Princeton and Keppoch, Prince Edward Island, Canada, died November 21 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. He had suffered a stroke.
Born in West Newton, Massachusetts, he attended Harvard College, received his bachelor's degree from McGill University and master's and doctorate degrees from Yale University. A popular teacher, he lectured in the Psychology Department at Princeton University from 1966 to 1990. He was also frequently invited to lecture at other universities in North America and abroad. After making significant contributions to the study of animal behavior and ethology, he turned his attention to the riddle of human consciousness and became best known for his provocative book, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, a nominee for the National Book Award in 1978. The unusual scope of his work spanned psychology, anthropology, history, philosophy, religion, and literary studies.
Dr. Jaynes was the son of the late Rev. Julian C. Jaynes and Clara Bullard Jaynes and was the brother of the late Helen Jaynes Bryant and Robert Bullard Jaynes. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Mildred Jaynes of Gilsum, New Hampshire.
