All other areas are considered unsterile event thought they have not been contaminated (AfPP 2007, ORNAC 2005).

However, some staff-based rituals such as changing clothing and covering hair before entering the operating theatre do contribute to the protection of patients by reinforcing theatre discipline and reminding staff of the vulnerability of the people in their care (ACORN 2006, ORNAC 2006, Roxburgh et al 2006, AORN 2007).
