VEAC provides independent advice to the state government on Victoria's public land
About us
The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) conducts investigations, as requested by the Victorian Government, relating to the protection and ecologically sustainable management of the environment and natural resources of public land. The Council is made up of five members, including a Chairperson, who have a range of experience, skills and knowledge in a number of areas related to management of public land and natural resources. VEAC was established under the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council Act 2001. VEAC replaced the Environment Conservation Council (ECC) which in turn replaced the Land Conservation Council (LCC).

The team at VEAC wishes you all a safe and joyous festive season. We also send our thanks to all the incredible volunteers and organisations who are dedicated to protecting the vulnerable native animals living in our natural environment such as this endangered Spotted-tail Quoll. Our State has many wonderful natural places on public land and a continuing commitment to protecting the habitats of native animals and plants. For more information on where you could go this Summer to get into the great outdoors visit Healthy Parks Healthy People at https://lnkd.in/ge_gFJKa #biodiversity #nationalparksVictoria #parksvic #spottedtailquoll

We’ve released our interim report on the values of the Central Highlands state forests. The report will inform community engagement from February 2024 on the future of the state forests being conducted by the Eminent Panel for Community Engagement. The Minister for Environment requested VEAC conduct the assessment of the values of the state forests in March 2023. The report also identifies typical land use categories commensurate with the values. Take a look at the report https://lnkd.in/g7kvtT-R Details about the Eminent Panel for Community Engagement click here https://lnkd.in/gi283kRn #MinisterforEnvironment Steve Dimopoulos #VictorianStateForests #CentralHIghlands #landcategories

VEAC council members and staff recently spent a day inspecting the Central Highlands including areas around Cambaville, Steavensons Falls, the Wirrawilla Rainforest walk. (Taungurung Country) and Upper Yarra Reservoir (Wurundjeri Country). Council examined values and issues including local recreation, fire history, water supply, threatened species and non-Aboriginal history as part of VEAC’s current Assessment of the values of the Central Highlands state forests. Great to be part of the Royal Society of Victoria/Alluvium Foundation’s forests symposium last week and to talk about the next chapter for Victoria’s public land forests with scientists, Traditional Owners and the community. These multi-stakeholder conversations are important, hoping there will more to follow. Image: VEAC Chairperson, Mellissa Wood at forests symposium #royalsocietyvictoria
