Synonyms: protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase, protoporphyrinogenase, PPO, Protox, HemG, HemY
Systematic Name: protoporphyrinogen-IX:oxygen oxidoreductase
Unification Links: BRENDA:1.3.3.4, ENZYME:1.3.3.4, IUBMB-ExplorEnz:1.3.3.4
Reaction:
protoporphyrinogen IX + 3 dioxygen → protoporphyrin IX + 3 hydrogen peroxide
Enzymes and Genes:
protoporphyrinogen oxidase: hemJ ( Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 )
protoporphyrinogen oxidase: PPOX ( Homo sapiens )
protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase isozyme II: PPXII ( Nicotiana tabacum )
protoporphyrinogen oxidase: PPOX ( Arabidopsis thaliana col )
Summary:
This is the last common enzyme in the biosynthesis of chlorophylls and heme [Che00]. Two isoenzymes exist in plants: one in plastids and the other in mitochondria. This is the target enzyme of phthalimide-type and diphenylether-type herbicides [Che00]. The enzyme from oxygen-dependent species contains FAD [Dailey98]. Also slowly oxidizes mesoporphyrinogen IX.
