Berrios Martínez, Rubén

(1930–93) politician, public official; born in Aibonito, Puerto Rico. He was educated abroad, first in the United States at the University of Georgetown (B.A.) and Harvard (M.A.), and then at Oxford (Ph.D.). An accomplished orator, he was the head of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (1970–93) and a member of the Puerto Rican Senate (1972–73). In 1971 he was jailed for three months for a sit-in on the island of Culebra protesting the U.S. military presence there.
