Pepin Shafrannyi

(Saffron Pippin), a winter variety of apple developed by I. V. Michurin between 1907 and 1915 by crossing the Orleans Renet with a hybrid seedling (Pepin litov-skii X Chinese apple). The bright red fruits are medium-sized and weigh about 90 g. The skin is thick, and the yellowish flesh is compact, juicy, and finely mealy. The apple has a distinctive spicy-winy taste and a delicate aroma.

The fruit is harvested in late September and is ripe by the end of November. The apples are transportable. They may be eaten fresh or made into jam, compote, or juice. The apples store well until May. The trees are of average growth intensity. The apple yield is 220 to 280 kg from a 20- to 25-year-old tree. The trees bear fruit annually beginning in the third to fifth year. The Pepin shafrannyi is regionalized in the RSFSR, Ukrainian SSR, Byelorussian SSR, Kazakh SSR, Kirghiz SSR, Georgian SSR, Armenian SSR, Lithuanian SSR, and Estonian SSR.
