Here I reflect on the amazing life of Professor Peder Borgen, who received a knighthood from the King of Norway for his outstanding New Testament scholarship, including his work on Philo of Alexandria and the Gospel of John. It was a privilege also to have published his Yale PhD Thesis on John 6 in the Johannine Monograph Series (Wipf & Stock): Bread from Heaven.

This essay, in honor of Yale's Robert Wilson, explores Micah 6:8 as representing the peaceable ways of Israel's God--doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly before God--as the epitome of the Mosaic Law and the central teaching of Jesus. In embracing these values and living them out, a vision of prosperity--each one living under one's vine and fig tree--is advance with acute relevance, both then and now.

In my just-released introduction to the New Testament published by Abingdon I find myself trying to make several contributions that make this something of a new and serviceable approach. First, I proceed in canonical order, dividing the book into three parts (the Gospels and Jesus, Acts and the writings of Paul, General Letters and Revelation) beginning each chapter with laying out from three to six crises or background issues that help the reader appreciate the contexts in which the twenty-seven books of the New Testament were written. Nearly sixty crises and contextual issues are outlined overall, and I feel this grounded approach to the New Testament writings helps today’s readers better understand and interpret the writings regarding crises and contexts—both ancient and contemporary. Each chapter then proceeds to an overview of the literary features of each text, its message, and a brief section helping today’s readers engage the text meaningfully. And, the fourteen chapters wor...

The fourth episode of CNN's " Finding Jesus " second season focuses on King Herod, who ruled in Judea from 37-4 BC. In the Gospel of Matthew, Herod is portrayed as a ruthless, self-absorbed king, who slaughtered all the baby boys in Bethlehem—two years old and younger—because he was threatened by the quest of the Magi. If the wise men coming from the East were seeking the newborn " king of the Jews, " might this imply eventual competition for Herod's throne? Matthew portrays the wise men being led by a dream to return without informing Herod of their findings; hence his being threatened, and thus his ruthless response. While the biblical presentation of Herod is of a terrible and violent ruler, however, he was clearly an effective and important leader from a political standpoint. He launched many important building campaigns throughout Judea, and ruled Palestine in cooperation with the Romans (albeit as a puppet king, according to Mark Goodacre). He ruled effectively for over three decades, creating a stable period for growth and enterprise, and he is thus remembered as the greatest Jewish king directly following the Hasmonean Dynasty. That being the case, should he retain his appellation as " Herod the Great, " or should he be considered " Herod the Terrible, " as presented in the Gospel of Matthew? This is the question raised by the CNN episode on Herod, and the possible discovery of his tomb in the Herodion might provide a clue. This foreword to the new edition of "Jesus: What Manner of Man?" (Eugene, OR: Wipf & Stock, 2008) introduces one of Henry J. This essay builds upon a basic Synoptic Hypothesis, in keeping with what most scholars believe to be the relations between the Synoptic traditions; distinctive, however, is the adding of the Johannine tradition to the mix, featuring Mark and John as "the Bi-Optic Gospels" and developing a new overall theory of gospel relations with John IN the mix. Put succinctly, Matthew and Mark built upon Mark; John (at least its first edition) built AROUND Mark. John is different in purpose. Was the greatest wonder of Pentecost the wind, fire, and languages, or was it the gift of being able to discern the meaning of those speaking in other languages? Remarkable connections abound between the formative insights and early prophetic openings of George Fox and the content of his message delivered on Firbank Fell (1652) signalling the launching of the world-impacting Quaker movement. Query: how do one's transformative experiences and discoveries set the course for vocational direction and one's purpose for living?
God is present; that's central to the biblical witness and the gospel.

This is my foreword to A Catechism and Confession of Faith by Robert Barclay, a New Edition, Edited in Modern English, by Dean Freiday and Arthur O. Note Robert Barclay's engagement with the Westminster Confession; in this new edition, Freiday and Roberts have helpfully spelled out the biblical texts Barclay employed, letting the Scriptures speak for themselves on 14 central Christian themes, including aspects of biblical authority, theological themes, and the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit.

A tribute to John Punshon (draft, Quaker Studies 22.2, 2017, 219-25). John Punshon has been one of the premier Quaker historians and spokes-persons over the last four decades. Serving as Quaker Tutor at Woodbrooke, Visiting Professor of Quaker Studies at George Fox University and the first Geraldine Leatherock Chair of Quaker Studies at the Earlham School of Religion, John Punshon has contributed greatly to present historical and theological understandings of the Quaker movement, and he will be greatly missed. From his childhood experiences in a local church whilst living with his grandparents during the War to his education at Oxford, his public and political service and his development into a leading interpreter of Quaker history, faith and practice, his own reflections, shared at Milton Keynes Friends Meeting in 2003, provide a basis for understanding the origins of his thought and convictions as represented more extensively in his writings and spoken ministries. He will be greatly missed, but his contributions extend beyond the boundaries of space and time.

This essay explores the question as to whether a doctrine of continuing revelation has been a good thing or a bad thing within the Quaker movement. Indeed, being open to God's truth as disclosed authentically through scripture, church history, reason, personally, and corporately is central to the Gospel of Christ, who continues to teach his followers through the Holy Spirit. And yet, appeals to personal authority have been central to the seven leading Quaker divisions in ways that are instructive. Published in Quaker Perspectives: Good and Evil, eds. Of course he wasn't, but the way John's Gospel has influenced Spirit-based movements throughout church history betrays also its function and design in the late first-century Christian situation, as a more primitive memory of Jesus poses the basis for challenges to rising institutionalism and hierarchy in the sub-apostolic era. These themes are developed also in The Christology of the Fourth Gospel and elsewhere. Quaker Religious Thought #76 (1991): 27-43.

This paper builds on the work of Alan Kolp, who follows on the work of Edward Schillebeeckx, regarding the character of sacramentology itself. It furthers the discussion, however, by rooting an incarnational view in the ministry of Jesus itself, noting also the diversity of developments within New Testament Christianity, posing ways forward in an ecumenical valuing of the multiplicity of developing sacramental traditions within the church. A Quaker perspective may here be helpful and reconciling among the churches. It was published in Quaker Religious Thought 109 (2007): 30-45. Matthew follows Mark's text closely, simplifying some of the detail 2 John's account coheres with some features of Mark--including some details that Matthew omits--but John differs dramatically from Mark, not for theological reasons, but on matters of time, place, and particulars. Luke, however, follows John in some of the ways he departs from Mark--a clear sign of Luke's use of some features of the Johannine tradition, also evident elsewhere in Luke's departures from Mark in six dozen cases.

In Hebrew Scripture, Philo, and the Fourth Gospel, apophatic and kataphatic thrusts operate dialectically, involving Vias Negativa and Positiva, as sodalities and substances are furthered by means of modalities and forms. Especially in the Johannine tradition, the apophatic ministry of Jesus of Nazareth is constructed apologetically (and kataphatically) so as to lead later audiences into apophatic encounters with the divine presence revealed in Jesus as the Christ. Such is the operative character of Vias Negativa and Positiva, especially in the hands of the dialectical thinking and writing of the Fourth Evangelist. This essay thus argues how that is so.

In this essay I argue that the last verse of 1 John actually should be considered the main thrust of the entire letter. Johannine Christianity is NOT sectarian; it represents a form of radical Jewish cosmopolitanism. Thus, the main divisions between community members fall along the lines of Jewish and Gentile believers, whereby the latter are not convinced that participating in pagan festivities, exacerbated by the rise of the imperial cult under Domitian (81-96 CE--and following into the reign of Trajan) leads to some committing "death-producing sins" while "claiming to be without sin"--thus going against the first two Commandments and "making God a liar," etc.

Given the fact that the Gospel of John, despite being highly theologica in many way, also features more graphic, non-symbolic, sensorily-derived, and archaeologically-corroborated details than all the gospel traditions combined, perhaps is should be called THE MUNDANE GOSPEL. Building on the works of Albright, Brown, Charlesworth, von Wahlde, and others, this is one of the Johannine Riddles that merits a second look. In his letter to the Philippians, Paul sounds a number of themes and employs a variety of techniques that would have been familiar to Stoics and others within his Greco-Roman audience. Simply understanding the socio-religious background of a first-century situation, however, falls short of appreciating how the apostle operated, and what sort of impact might have been anticipated among his audiences. Within a cognitive-critical analysis of a biblical text, the Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy of Albert Ellis casts helpful light not only on what Paul was saying, but it also illumines what he was seeking to effect among his readers. By first addressing assumptions related to disturbing events, followed by a critique of their distortive effects, it can be seen that Paul is seeking to avail his readers a transformative way of seeing, which effects changes of both emotion and behavior. This Rational-Emotive Behavioral analysis of Paul's letter to the Philippians suggests some of the ways that might so—both then and now. As a cognitive-critical approach to biblical analysis, my methodology works with a particular psychological theory that has demonstrated robust effectiveness theoretically and practically, applying relevant insights to particular biblical texts. Again, the assumption is that biblical authors and audiences are human beings, and that persons think, feel, and act in ways that evidence continuity across temporal and cultural. Origen, Contenido y Perspectivas--The Gospel of John. Origin and Perspectives, eds. B. Estrada and L. G. Sarasa, Colección Teología Hoy 80 (Editorial Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Bogotá 2018).
