Dr Audrey Whitty, Director of the National Library of Ireland and a former curator of European and Asian Glass at the Corning Museum, describes the significance of the drawing: “Harry Clarke was a prominent stained-glass artist of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement. Of the eleven stained-glass windows he designed for the Honan Chapel in County Cork, the Saint Gobnait window is his most famous. “The design is considered one of Clarke’s finest works, with imaginative and expressive detail. One panel depicts the patron saint of beekeeping releasing her bees on a thief trying to steal her beehive. Another interesting detail is the white crystal line Gobnait has placed to ward off the plague. Clarke’s windows in the Honan Chapel were considered masterpieces and established his reputation as an artist. The windows were completed between 1915 and 1917,” she concluded. The artwork is on display on Level A of the main exhibition galleries at the museum in conjunction with the new exhibition The Murmur of Bees, which will continue until summer 2025. https://lnkd.in/e9V2AfXU

We were proud to welcome 2023 Booker Prize Winner Paul Lynch through the historic doors of the National Library of Ireland this week. The event was the first in our series ‘Celebrating Ireland’s Booker Winners’, hosting some of Ireland’s greatest living writers by through in-depth conversations about their Booker-prize winning works. The gathering saw an immense crowd join us in the beautiful setting of our Reading Room in our Kildare Street campus. Paul Lynch was in conversation with Irish writer, Belinda McKeon, and the event included a reading from ‘Prophet Song’, audience engagement, as well as an opportunity for book signings. We are grateful for the support and attendance of Minister Catherine Martin and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media. The series is curated by literary programmer Alan Hayes. 📅 The series will continue over May and June, with Booker Prize winners John Banville, Anne Enright, and Roddy Doyle joining us at the National Library (on Kildare Street, Dublin) in conversation with Claire Kilroy, Nuala O’Connor and Rob Doyle respectively. 💬 Dr Audrey Whitty: “Ireland has a very rich literary culture and history, and it is a great honour to bring together these contemporary literary greats through our doors. I am looking forward to hearing the conversations unfold as these writers discuss their novels. Celebrating contemporary Irish writing is integral to telling the story of Ireland and we are delighted to play our part.” 💬 Curator Alan Hayes: “Literature is rightfully regarded internationally as Ireland’s greatest artform, and it is no surprise that Ireland continues to punch above its weight. The National Library of Ireland is the living repository of Irish writing in both languages, it is the bedrock of our culture and is at the heart of our society. Thus, it is a pleasure to work with Dr Audrey Whitty and her dynamic team, as we celebrate these groundbreaking books and authors that have such pride of place, not only in Ireland but internationally.” 📍The Booker Series is free to attend, but advance booking is essential: https://lnkd.in/e3cCTena
