The results obtained after incorporating the competence "creativity" to the subject Technical Drawing of the first course of the Degree in Forestry, Technical University of Madrid, are presented in this study. At first, learning activities which could serve two functions at the same time -developing students- creativity and developing other specific competences of the subject- were considered. Besides, changes in the assessment procedure were made and a method which analyzes two aspects of the assessment of the competence creativity was established. On the one hand, the products are evaluated by analyzing the outcomes obtained by students in the essays suggested and by establishing a parameter to assess the creativity expressed in those essays. On the other, an assessment of the student is directly carried out through a psychometric test which has been previously chosen by the team. Moreover, these results can be applied to similar or could be of general application.

An online open access test (CREAX self-assessment) has been used in this work so that students from degrees in engineering in the Universidad Polite?cnica of Madrid (UPM) could self-assess their creative competence after several classroom activities. Different groups from the first year course have been statistically compared using data from their assessment. These first year students had different professors in the subject ?Technical Drawing? and belonged to several degrees in the UPM. They were as well compared regarding sex and a group of first year students was also compared to another last year group of the degree so as to observe possible differences in the achievement of this competence. Only one difference was detected concerning sex in one of the degrees. Among degrees, the higher marks obtained by students who had done specific exercises for the development of creativity in class is highlighted. Finally, a significantly high mark was observed in students during their last ...

There is a growing need to map rice ecosystems and to develop methods for monitoring rice distribution in order to account for rapid land use changes worldwide. In this study, we evaluated a methodology based on Vegetation Indices time series derived from an 8-day MODIS composite to identify rice fields and develop rice maps that can be timely updated in the long term. We have assessed the potential of the Spectral Shape Index time series and compared its performance with the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index in two coastal locations and in an inland location in the Mediterranean Region for 2012. A profile similarity comparison method, the Spectral Angle Mapper, was accomplished between the reference rice annual profile and the annual profiles of both indices in a pixel basis in order to determine rice pixels. The resultant maps were validated with rice masks, where available, or ortophotos and crop surface statistics where not. The results obtained demonstrated the potential o...

Abstract The main objective of this work is to assess and use Landsat TM5 for the inventory and study of the evolution of water quality in gravel pit ponds within the natural park, Parque Regional del Sureste (PRSE), from 1984 to 2011. First, the normalized difference water index (NDWI) was applied to 230 Landsat TM5 images to distinguish water and non-water information. Next, the surface reflectance derived from Landsat TM5 images atmospherically corrected with the Landsat Ecosystem Disturbance Adaptive Processing System (LEDAPS) was compared to water-leaving reflectance measured in the field, showing a significant overestimation of surface reflectance derived from Landsat data. Thus, a new regression equation was proposed linking the in situ Secchi depth (SD) measurements to surface reflectance measured by Landsat 5. This regression was validated and subsequently applied to every image, providing an SD value for each pixel in the time series. Finally, the retrieved SD values were used to compute the trophic state of water bodies according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) classification. The results show an increase in the surface area of water bodies in the PRSE from 1984 to 2006, as well as an improvement in their water quality.

In this paper, an objective analysis of the continuous assessment under the application of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) in four courses of different Schools at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) for more than three years was carried out. Our work hypothesis (the success of students following continuous assessment would be greater than those following the traditional final

This article provides a critical study of a New European Bauhaus initiative in the context of transversality, relational nature and sustainability of construction, architecture and civil engineering. Social and environmental factors in this ecosystem of innovation are highlighted, as well as the perspectives of actors within it. The relationships between art, technology and science of historical Bauhaus are assessed. The investigation of transversality was carried out using a visual tool developed by the authors, CATI, considering sustainability as the backbone. The New European Bauhaus is a pool of innovation that is supported by governments, academia, industry, society and the (natural) environment. It aims at social, environmental and cultural sustainability and includes ideas of social transformation. It is necessary to absorb the impact and overwhelming cultural consequences of previous and current Industrial Revolutions, principally relying on cyber–physical systems to generat...

This article critically reviews the development of painting art and the engineering of bridges in the first half of the 20 th century. It shows that the expression of thought is directed towards innovation at a certain historical moment and non-imitation as a professional ethos. The vision is articulated through a multilevel perspective, including the social shaping of technology. The different milestones are chronologically compared following the Artistic Vanguards. It is shown that there was an accumulation of radical, disruptive innovation in the period between the World Wars. New tools to develop creativity were sought, and new figurative solutions and materials, such as concrete for bridge construction, began to be employed. The impressionist Monet and Eiffel and the cubist Picasso and Ribera deeply comprehended the previous techniques and dared to challenge them. The transversality of art and engineering is key to the innovation process.
