The effect of overhanging on corrugated box compression strength is well known. However, the combined effect of overhang and humidity is usually based on the superposition method, where humidity and overhang effects are applied separately. In this study, 9x9x9” single-wall corrugated boxes were used. They were tested with a relative humidity of 50%, 65%, and 80% together with an overhang of 1 – 4 inches. As expected, the humidity reduces the compression strength of the box. As the overhang increases toward the midpoint of the box’s dimension, the rate of strength reduction becomes slower. This is because the box corners carry a lot more load than the wall. Estimation of strength as a percentage of the strength of zero overhang for 9x9x9” boxes was developed as: % Of Zero Overhang Strength = 0.0233x2 - 1.8581x + 99.089 where x = Overhang as % of box dimension. The equation can also be presented in term of strength loss as: % Loss from Zero Overhang Strength = -0.0233x2 + 1.8581x + 0.9105 Keywords Overhang; Corrugated Boxes; Compression Strength; Humidity Effect

An incline impact test can be used as a shock test in lieu of a drop test in several test protocols, including ISTA Procedure 1A [1]. Some test protocols, such as ISTA Procedure 1E [2], only allow for an incline impact test and horizontal impact test. In this case study, a graph was developed for a 500-lb impact tester at Christian Brothers University (CBU) Packaging Laboratory. It determines sliding platform location on the incline for a given packaged-product weight to meet the impact velocity recommended by the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA). One station of the platform location higher than the station obtained from the graph is recommended to ensure the meeting of ISTA recommended impact velocity. It is well known that weight is not used in impact velocity of a free fall drop. However, this case study shows that weight contributes to impact velocity of an incline impact test. It contributes to the rolling friction. A heavier weight yields a smaller coefficient of ...

This is the third piece of work under "Learning by Doing" series in the packaging program at Christian Brothers University. A student studied the combinations of temperature and relative humidity (RH) of the CSZ ZP-32 environmental chamber at the CBU ISTA Certified Packaging Laboratory. A graph showing a range of RH for a given temperature was developed with the following findings:  The chamber could not reach any RH when the temperature was set below 38F.  The chamber could reach an upper limit of about 95% RH when the temperature was set above 38F.  The lower limit of RH, "y" in %, followed the equation below, where "x" was the temperature in F. y = 289.66e-0.028x The graph was then attached to the front side of the chamber door.

Christian Brothers University has offered a Packaging Engineering Certificate since the 2002-2003 academic year. The program covers the basics of packaging engineering, including materials, distribution packaging, and medical packaging. The program is being expanded to cover more details in these as well as other related areas. As part of a senior project in civil engineering, two students who were interested in structural engineering chose to work on the structural design of containers. Reviewing available related standards and guidelines was part of the project. This paper gives a history of transport packaging since the 1880’s as the industrial revolution began and manufacturers shipped their goods nationwide via railroad. It also describes the essence of the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC). In addition, two designs were produced for wooden crates to be used for the transport of a marine diesel engine. The alternatives are differentiated by type of wood and component fasteners used. The first uses light basswood and nails to fasten the different pieces of the crate. The second uses heavier yellow poplar wood for durability, and bolts that allow the crate to be reassembled and reused. The second option was recommended because, in addition to the benefits of reusability and strength, the poplar turned out to be cheaper at current local prices.

Abstract An expert system has been developed for teaching concrete mix design using the Personal Consultant Plus expert system development tool. Several useful features for education purposes are discussed. The system is highly interactive and allows the student to ask questions such as WHY an input data is need or HOW a certain parameter or a conclusion is derived. Several graphics images and help messages are incorporated into the system. The system contains answers to several fundamental questions on the mix design process. Programming techniques are also presented. This paper demonstrates that educational software can be easily developed using an expert system development tool.

Abstract A semi-automated student advising system has been developed using QUATTRO spreadsheet software. The system consists of five inter-related spreadsheet templates; MAIN, RECORD, PROGRESS, AID, and SCHED. The MAIN template provides the listing of required courses. Student records are kept in the RECORD template. The student progress chart is displayed by the PROGRESS template. The AID template recommends to the advisor what courses the student can take. The SCHED template provides a worksheet for trial schedules, so that time conflicts can be avoided. The system performs tedious bookkeeping and analyzing tasks, so the advisor can spend more time with the student.

Establishing a workforce pipeline is critical for any industry, including packaging. What follows are techniques to recruit students into four-year undergraduate packaging programs, ways to prepare them for our industry, and ideas on how companies can get involved. Studies have indicated current and future shortages of college students. Only 61.8% of high school graduates continued to college in 2022, a decrease of 0.9% from 2020. Furthermore, high school graduates are projected to peak in number in 2025 before seeing a decline over the next dozen years due to lower birth rates amid the economic disruptions of the Great Recession. Meanwhile, existing college enrollment is down by almost 7.5% since 2019. COVID-19 significantly impacted undergraduate enrollment, with an unprecedented 13% drop, according to one estimate, in first-year enrollment from the fall of 2019 to 2021. Two-year colleges bore the brunt of these losses, with first-year enrollment almost 19% lower. Colleges have been offering courses online with increasing frequency, a trend accelerated by COVID-19. In the fall of 2020 during the pandemic, 75% of all undergraduate students were in at least one online course, and 44% of undergraduate students exclusively took online courses. Online alternatives to college such as "Grow with Google," a partnership of Google and Coursera, have also gained significantly in enrollment. Such programs can provide learners a cost-effective, speedy alternative to a college degree program. The Institute of Packaging Professionals offers other enhancement possibilities through packaging program partnerships with the schools. For example, IoPP's Fundamentals of Packaging Technology online course serves as a prerequisite among students lacking previous packaging training for a master's-level supply chain management curriculum. Current high school students are part of Generation Z, the first generation of true digital natives. They do not know a world without smartphones, expect technology to be able to do anything, do not distinguish between the physical and digital worlds, and no longer define work by a place. The digital nature of online learning, along with the time and space flexibility it affords, comes naturally to them. Given these factors, developing the new generation of packaging professionals is challenging and requires a novel approach.

Corrugated boxes, widely used in packaging products, experience a significant reduction in their compressive strength with the increase in humidity. This could cause problems during the warehousing phase when boxes are stacked. A psychrometric chart is often used to determine humidity-related quantities based on wet and dry bulb temperatures. In this paper, four neural networks were developed to predict relative humidity, specific volume, humidity ratio, and enthalpy at saturation from wet and dry bulb temperatures. The networks are implemented as web-based applications and are available to the public free of charge as part of the CBU Packaging e-Materials Project.
