The aim of present study was to evaluate efficacy of the insect repellent technique with insecticide implantation technique checked against larval instars of Aeolesthes sarta under field conditions in Quetta district, Baluchistan Province. The reported research work was conducted at the larval emergence during the first week of April 2014 till the last week of March 2015. The insect repellent and insecticide implantation techniques were applied on red delicious apple trees (Malus domestica) due to high level of infestations. Aluminium phosphide showed highest mortality rate (52.43%) and least mortality rate (29.09%) was recorded on petrol plugging during insecticide implantation technique. It was concluded that insect repellant technique completely failed in controlling the population density of this pest.

PurposeThe study seeks to examine the extent and the causes of multidimensional poverty as opposed to the traditional unidimensional headcount poverty measures to understand the true face of economic deprivation in Punjab, Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachPoverty is measured through the Alkire–Foster index at the geographically disaggregated levels of divisions and districts, and the causes of pervasive poverty are analyzed through a logit model using the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) comprising of 95,238 households in 9 geographical divisions and their 36 districts.FindingsIt was found that poverty in Punjab is associated with larger household size, inadequate wealth, and low levels of educational attainment, and that both matric as well as post-matric education reduced the chances of poverty of household heads by approximately 19 percent. In addition to rural poverty, the study finds evidence of urban poverty across the geographical districts of Punjab. Contrary to ...

The present study was conducted to determine the ratio of obesity in young girls of Sardar Bahadur Khan (SBK) women's university, Quetta, Balochistan and its relationship with their daily diet. A total of 40 samples was collected from May 2013 to May 2014. The result of the present investigation revealed that about 15% of the girls were found to be having overweight than their ages. The positive correlation values (r) obtained for the different diets meat, fast foods, different grains (cereals, rice), cream (taken mainly in breakfast) and eggs revealed that all these diets might have some kind of correlation with the obesity especially during their young age. While in contrast, the negative correlation values (r) obtained for all those young girls who used green tea, vegetables, fruits and milk in their daily diet revealed that they have no correlation with obesity.

Abstract This paper describes the implementation of a neural network based hurdle avoidance controller for a car like robot using a low cost single chip 89C52 microcontroller. The neural network is the multilayer feed-forward network with back propagation training algorithm. The network is trained offline with tangent-sigmoid as activation function for neurons and is implemented in real time with piecewise linear approximation of tangent-sigmoid function. Results have shown that up-to twenty neurons in hidden layer can be ...

Abstract Cross Border Interference (CBI) due to uncoordinated frequency allocations across international borders can cause degradation of wireless networks. There is a need to analyze the factors which cause CBI and to propose solutions to reduce it to improve network quality. Various phenomena that cause or enhance the effect of CBI are presented and multiple techniques are discussed which can reduce CBI such as optimum management of transmitter power, lowering of antenna heights, changing base station ...

Abstract This paper proposes and implements a solution for enhancing public transportation management services based on GPS and GSM in Punjab province of Pakistan. The system consists of four modules: BUS Station Module, In-BUS Module, BASE Station Module and BUS Stop Module. Equipped with PC and GSM modem, BUS Station Module sends the initialization information containing the bus number and license plate number to In-BUS Module and BASE Station Module using SMS. The microcontroller based In-BUS Module ...

Abstract The junior level Power Electronics Lab is an important component of Electrical Engineering curriculum at University of The Punjab, Lahore. It serves to familiarize the students with the design simulation and analysis of power electronic converters. In this paper, design and implementation of a low cost microcontroller based controlled rectifier training module for single-phase system to be utilized in Power Electronics Lab is presented. The module comprises of various units. The first unit is zero crossing detector followed by ...

ABSTRACT A self teaching image processing and voice recognition based system is developed to educate visually impaired children, chiefly in their primary education. System comprises of a computer, a vision camera, an ear speaker and a microphone. Camera, attached with the computer system is mounted on the ceiling opposite (on the required angle) to the desk on which the book is placed. Sample images and voices in the form of instructions and commands of English, Urdu alphabets, Numeric Digits, Operators and Shapes are already stored in the database. A blind child first reads the embossed character (object) with the help of fingers than he speaks the answer, name of the character, shape etc into the microphone. With the voice command of a blind child received by the microphone, image is taken by the camera which is processed by MATLAB® program developed with the help of Image Acquisition and Image processing toolbox and generates a response or required set of instructions to child via ear speaker, resulting in self education of a visually impaired child. Speech recognition program is also developed in MATLAB® with the help of Data Acquisition and Signal Processing toolbox which records and process the command of the blind child.

The study investigates the role of higher education in economic growth for Pakistan between 1972 and 2005 using the application of Johansen Cointegration and Toda & Yamamoto (1995) Causality approach in Vector Autoregressive (VAR) framework. It examines whether higher education affect long run economic growth in Pakistan. The empirical analysis reveals that there is a long run relationship between economic growth and higher education, which suggests that these variables are necessary for each other. ...

Abstract This paper proposes and implements an integrated library management system for book search and placement tasks. Book searching task is carried out with the help of a mobile phone. The user can check the availability of a particular book by title or author name using his mobile phone. The information received by the user contains book code number and location of the book inside the shelf. Book placement task involves placing the book inside the shelf according to the assigned code number using image processing. Digital ...

Abstract An overview of the factors responsible in degradation of GPS (Global Positioning System) is described. Moreover, the major sources of error, their cause and how to reduce their effects are briefly discussed. Range errors such as ionospheric and tropospheric delays and equipment errors such as noise and multipath are separately explained. The latest developments in enhancing the quality of GPS technology are mentioned.

Abstract A cheap guidance system based on AT89C52 microcontroller is developed for facilitating visually impaired people. Ultrasonic sensors are used to calculate distance of the obstacles around the blind person to guide the user towards the available path. Output is in the form of voice which the blind person can hear eg, right, left etc. In its advance mode, the system will be able to recognize objects using image processing algorithms. Results are presented to show the validity and performance of the system.

Abstract Ball-Scorer is a differentially driven autonomous robot that was fabricated to compete in National Engineering Robotics Contest (NERC) 2008. This paper discusses the development of each component of the robot that is designed to pick up the balls from ball stand by navigating through a grid of white lines and potting these balls into goal posts of different heights. The sensory system of robot comprises of infrared sensors, potentiometers and bump switches. Three controllers namely proportional integral, proportional and ...
