PhD Thesis completed in 2010 at the Faculty Sprachen und Kulturen des Christlichen Orients, Asien-Afrika-Institut, Universität Tübingen, Germany. In the thesis the coinage of Sajids, Daysam ibn Ibrahim, Sallarids and Rawwadids who ruled in Armenia and Adharbayjan (ancient Atropatena) in Xth century AD is discussed. The study also represents a comparative analysis of Oriental sources and coins offering a background for the political history of the region in Xth century. It has 287 pages, ca. 180 coin types (90 % illustrated). This is the most comprehensive catalogue on coins struck by the aforementioned dynasties and political individuals of Xthe century in Armenia and Adharbayjan.
The book is now available for sale at Münzgalerie (München). The price is 48,50 Euros (excl. shipping costs). The orders can be directed to Mrs. Maria Boehm at: mgm@muenzgalerie.de

This brief notes discusses the circumstances under which a Ziyarid prince Langar ibn Wushmgir (d. 352 AH) managed to strike coins in Hawsam, the Gilan province of Iran in the 10th century AD. The coin discussed in this short online publication is a unique silver dirham kept in the Forschungsstelle für Islamische Numismatik Tübingen. This coin is an important historical source shedding more light on the history of Hawsam and the Gilan province in this period.

Based on contemporary numismatic evidence as well as literary sources this paper offers a probable localization for the mysterious mint of "Gulistawan" in the late Ilkhanid period (14th century CE). It is set forth that the coinage under discussion was organized at the monastery of Goloshtivanq (today in ruins) in Vayots Dzor region of Armenia. The monastery was a fiscal center which also struck coins out of silver delivered from silver mines located nearby.

The activities by Byzantine both Comnenos family representatives and patriarchs is considered in the paper as the main factor for the compromise policy run by Muslim rulers of al-Jazira.

Although the coins of the Dulafid governors of Jibāl are rather well known to scholars thanks to scientific literature and auction catalogues, nevertheless a comprehensive catalogue of coins struck by that dynasty centered initially at Karaj and then Iṣbahān in the third century Hijra is still missing. Dulafid coins were never catalogued, nor were they properly discussed in the context of the political developments in the province in that period. In addition, there are few publications dealing with history of the dynasty. The article of S. A. al-Kharabsheh (2003), along with one written by E. Marin (Marin EI 2 : 623) and a brief account by R. Mottahedeh in the Cambridge History of Iran (Mot-tahedeh 1975: 58–90) complete the list of principal works on the topic. From the numismatic point of view one should mention the MA study of A. Disuqi, which includes a chapter on the Dulafid coins, but only with respect to the mint of Iṣbahān (Disuqi 2012: 141–154). In this article the main coin types representing the coinage of the Dulafids concentrated at the mints of Jibāl (Iṣbahān, Hamadhān, Māh al-Baṣra), Fārs and Khūzistān (Shīrāz and Arrajān) in ah 270–282 are catalogue. In addition, the remarkable features of Dulafid policy in the region are discussed on the basis of both literary and numismatic evidence.

This paper discusses the political and economic compromises of near-eastern rulers of XI – XIII centuries as reflected in contemporary coinage. An analysis of reasons that enabled hybrid coinage combining contemporary Islamic and Christian motifs is also offered in this essay. From this point of view, a special significance must be attached to the role of local Christian or Muslim communities, their relationship with each other, an adequate perception and tolerance exercised by local rulers in terms of medieval multi-ethnic and multi-confessional society. On the other hand, international trade would demand for rulers to secure paradigms commonly used in Islamic coinage, in order to allow a coin participate in both near and faraway trade.
